Is there a possibility the backlight of lcd got burned? I know only about burned pixels not for backlight. Gonna be fixed by itself or should I take it to Acer service?

Tnx.
I have found that it flashes a bit too, but if I jiggle the power cord where it enter the computer, it's just fine. Not the very best connector, and sometimes it's not running on AC at all, so I have to plug it in again. I move it around alot.

dvd problem

Further to my post a few pages ago.

I'm still having the same problem with my dvd drive. It will not recognise blank dvd discs. It was when i bought the laptop but after backing up 3 dvds it no longer works.
It still recognises blank cd's and pre-recorded dvds, just blanks that it wont work with. The drive just shows up as empty. I've tried a new batch of discs and still no joy.

Any ideas from anybody?

My power adapter issue

I had issues with my adapter not charging, and I did the cord wiggling thing, and sometimes it worked, sometimes not, then it just got to be a plain crap shoot as to whether it would work or not.

My first thought was, %$%^, the adapter is bad and I'll have to wait forever to get a new one.

Believe it or not, I lucked out. Know what the problem was? The power cable going into the adapter !

I pitched that cord, used another that I had laying around, and I've had no more issues since. I've seen some funky things go wrong with PC's before (been at this for 15 years) but I have to honestly say that I have never seen a bad power cable before that had no visible flaws/cuts/kinks/etc.

Just for fun, try a new cable.

I don't think it's the cord cause when I unplug it and put it on battery it does the same thing. Also when the laptop is cool (just powered it on) I am hearing a "hissing" sound coming from the area between the "acer" bottom lcd area and the 6 quick buttons (have not idea where it actually comes) which goes away if the screen go on power-save (after sceensaver - when the screen is black).

Is it really possible to have a backlight issue really? Are they so sensitive? I made a test and put a complete white as windows background and I see a noticeable drop in the white at the top. Will Acer change the laptop if I show it to them or will they say that this is not a major problem?

Thanks for the responses.

I had a similar problem with my desktop pc and it turned out to be a faulty windows installation. I know it is hard but try to do a full recovery disc installation and try then. If then it makes the same, it is the drive that is defective.

The GPU and Overclocking and CPU temp questions are all answerred somewhere earlier in this thread. I know it takes awhile to get though it all, but there is alot of good info in it, and well worth the time!

Question

I got a 1714SMi this week (absolutely delighted with it ) and it has 1Gig of DDR333 in it.

Is it worth swapping the memory to DDR400 or is the difference only noticeable in benchmarks?

Good Looking Bag - but tight fit

My first post - just got the 1712 and my only complaint has to be that damm righthand side SHIFT key, its soooo tiny.

but got this bag for it @ mountain equipment co-op in Toronto, its a good looking bag with lots of storage compartments - BUT its a really snug fit - dont know how many of you would find that a negative - but i can live with it.

Check it out - and its relatively cheap $82.00 CAD.

Rey -

I noticed you are using the discontinued Logitech Mouseman Traveler. I used to always use that mouse and loved it for portability.

However, once I installed the integrated Bluetooth in my Aspire 1710, I switched to a Logitech MX900 Bluetooth mouse.

Anyways, it was neat to see you using that mouse

hi dennis

hahaha - yeah i love that little mouse too, i even use one for my desktop - but i will definitely look into the MX900 when i get Bluetooth installed.

thanks for the heads up, and how do u find the mouse for gaming - i like the Mouseman Traveler because i can use it right on the laptop, even though the Windows XP sticker gets in the way from time to time.
