looking for upgrading tips
Hello folks,
I'm running my 1714SMi (with default factory settings) almost for an year and a half without any major glitches so far. But now i'm considering to upgrade this machine. It's a HUGE thread here which probably conceal all answers for my questions but i'm still going to ask you guys a little help. Which RAM is currently the best to consider (I plan to total my RAM up to 2GB)? Also i never flashed a BIOS.. Should i do also that? Currently I have an 3,4 GHz CPU but is it reasonable to upgrade it also? Also, my major concern is about HT.. My notebook is mainly set up for audio works but HT has a quite an annoying issues with some audio protocols/hardwares so i'm anxiously trying to find a solution for disabling HT. Is it possible on 1714SMi? Many thanks in advance! cheers, e |

Hello, all.
I've been a lurker here for quite a while now, and thought I'd give a little back by sharing something I just learned. The other day, my 1712 just powered off in the middle of the day while I was working. No warnings, just *poof*, a dead computer. Nothing I did made a difference, not even plugging in the spare power brick. No lights, no response -- nothing! Before I sent the out of warranty machine back to Acer for service, I decided to try everything else I could think of. Long story short: I removed the battery and tried it again. Behold! Lazarus rose from the dead. Everything back to normal, like nothing ever happened. Linux didn't even fsck! Anyway, this is a real gem of a thread. Thanks again for all the help, guys. |

High temperatures
Hi Guys,
I have a 1711 Sci (2.8 GHz Northwood processor) for two years now. The noise the fans generate has always been annoying, but since a couple of weeks, some of the fans starts making a whining sound. I openen the case and removed the dust (and cat hair) from the heatsink fins and from the fans, but to no avail. I started searching on the net for a solution, and that is how I can accross this wonderful forum. I thought is was normal that the fans are always blowing at nearly full speed, because a desktop cpu pentium 4 is build into this notebook. But I read processor temperatures of other users about 40-50°C in idle. When I run the program MobileMeter, I see that the CPU temperature is around 70°C in idle! Processor usage is 0%!! No wonder the fans are spinning that fast. This is a screenshot of MobileMeter: The temperature raises from 37°C to 70°C in about 20 minutes. Does somebody have an idea what could be wrong with my notebook? Because the notebook is already 2 years old, I don't have any warranty left and I am afraid of high costs when returning it to Acer. Does anybody have an idea what I could do to lower the temperature of the CPU? Thanks Marc |

Hi all,
I can proudly say that my trick with disconnecting smaller fan on CPU did and is still doing the trick; the beast is cool and quiet ![]() Quote:
for it ![]() Mark, read my last post on this page, it says how significantly lower temperature of 17xx. Blowing off the dust from radiator is probably the most important thing in this process.. Ok, it looks like I blew up Acer service partition (the 7,6 MB one ) .. Could anyone please send me ghost image of your partition on ?meehaw@poczta.onet.pl?Currently I don't have access to any other XP installation cd, and I'd really like to make that Acer xp working.. And one more thing, when I checked my ssystem with cpu-z, it says that my stock nanya ram has cls 2.0!! I thought it should be 2.5.. Perhaps I got luck and they gave me faster ram Too bad I cannot read that topic too often, filter in my job treats this all forum as erotic site and thus forbids access |

Hey all... Im back. For the last two years I have been running a WD 400 GB drive... its been tough, because I have had to archive SOOO many designs (I do graphic and media) on to DVDs and then find them and recopy whenever I need a previous design or file.
Now I see that the new Parallel Drives are out.... There is an ATA 100 drive with 750 GB.... Does anyone know if the Acer can SEE all that or what would happen? I know I was one of the first to try 4GB RAM and the 400 HD.... but I am just checking to see if anyone knows or is planning to try the new 750 Drives? I am going to.... cause I can sell it for close to cost if it doesnt work. Comments ?? |

I've been considering upgrading my hard drive, and although I hadn't originally thought of anything that huge, I may as well go for broke if it would work. A notebook with 750GB of space...that would be just too cool!! ![]() Let me know if it works out...you seem like the brave and adventurous sort, so I bow before you in advance of any wisdom you can provide ![]() |

I have installed a 500GB HD in the 1712 for working with Hi-Definition video files, the Seagate ST3500841A without issues that uses the ATA-100 interface. Just make sure that the pin-out and interface on the hard drive is the same and it *should* work.

Congrats on the new car Rachel
And sailor, thanks for sharing your experience...sounds likely that the 750GB drive should work out fine, since it uses a standard ATA100 interface, AFAIK. Probably won't get around to this until late June/early July, so I guess whoever does it first, can provide an update. |

Hey Guys.... I am likely gonna go do this in the next week or two... nice to hear the 500 works ok. My 400 is packed and I have DVDs up the wazzoo Id rather have instant access to...
I have FINALLY... ALSO.... AFTER MONTHS.... gotten that OTHER Acer I purchaced here to work. I dont even recall the name of the guy who sold it... but I waited and waited and finally got a NEW Motherboad for $110 and $99 installed. I paid like $450 for the BAD Acer. So I just got a SECOND 1712smi for only $650 !! Now I need to deck it out... it has the lower end intel graphics and only an 80GB.... tonight it will have my old 250GB, then it will have my 400 when I put my 750 in this one. Anyone else own TWO 1710's ?? = ) |

Hey.... Its been a while... I was the first to try the 2GB Ram and make 4GB total, but it was all ECC Ram which didnt work. Has anyone else tried to get 4GB of ram and got it to work? Is there any NON Server 2GB chips out yet? Also, what is the best 1GB pairs to get and can anyone post a link? I paid WAY WAY too much in 2004 for my last ones... I am sure there is cheaper and someone here has a good source. TIA !
