MKV can be played by both mplayer and I believe VLC now as well(They had a bug preventing it for a while but I think that got fixed an update or two ago).

MKV for those unaware is the MatrosKa Video container, and is IMO one of the better container(My preferred Video container) as it can obviously store a variety of compressions such as h.264, but also handles seperate streams, chapter markers, etc all very nicely. And is open to boot

Who is already partway through re-encoding all his videos into h.264 mkv files on his server.

seablade, what do you use to convert divx files to h.264 mkv (I can convert to H.264 using DVDFab Platinum, but don't know how to package as MKV)? I've been looking to do that, but haven't found a good converter as yet.

On-topic: VLC, VLC, VLC!!!!! Although, I might have to check out GOM. At the least, the interface can't be as bad as VLC's.

Regards,

z.

VLC interface is undergoing a rewrite to QT I believe and some of the things I saw in a thread on the forums are kinda nice.

To convert to mkv I will likely have to recomend the mkv tools and ffmpeg to do the re-encoding. Shouldn't be hard to set up a script to do that, what OS you on?

I mainly use VLC for larger files, and WMP for smaller ones. It's weird cause WMP can't play the large files w/out lagging or getting all scrambled if i fastforward.

So yes, another nod for VLC....
