Got the new HP 8710w mobile workstation
I needed to get a new machine to run some virtualization software (Cisco emulator - Dynamips), which requres a lot of memory and CPU processing power. I've looked at the nw9440, and was going to get one, but then HP announced the new Santa Rosa-based machines, so I decided to wait a little. So finally placed my order on 7/18, and it took 3 weeks to get it due to the fact that it's too new, and HP was waiting for shipment. I got the RM265UT model, so it was a promo item with the following specs (set me back almost $3500 incl. tax and shipping):
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz 800Mb FSB 4Mb L2 cache RAM: 2GB Chipset: Intel PM965 800MHz FSB Video: NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M w/ 512Mb RAM, DirecX 10 support HDD: 120 GB 5400 rpm SATA Optical Drive: Blu-Ray Disc DVD+/-RW SuperMulti DL Audio: High Definition Audio support w/24-bit DAC; Integrated stereo speakers; Integrated microphone; Touch-sensitive controls for volume up, volume down, and mute; Stereo headphone/line out; Stereo microphone in Ports: 6 USB 2.0 1 IEEE 1394 1 RJ-11 1 RJ-45 1 microphone in 1 headphone/line-out 1 docking connector 1 HDMI 1 battery connector 1 external VGA monitor 1 AC power Slots: 1 Type I/II PC card 1 integrated Smart Card Reader 1 8-in-1 media reader NIC: Intel GigabitEthernet adapter Wireless: Intel Centrino 4965AGN Display: 17.0-inch diagonal WUXGA wide-viewing angle anti-glare This machine rocks! I have the HP 3-in-1 NAS dock, and this machine works beautifully with the dock. The numeric keypad is very handy as well. This machine came with Windows Vista pre-installed, but I "ghosted" the factory image, then blew it away for Windows XP Professional 64-bit version. That was about 2 days of hair pulling to find the right drivers, since HP doesn't provide any (I wonder why?). Finally decided to scrap that and just install XP Pro. Works great, not sure how much faster it works than nw9440, but going to install my virtualization software and give it a run. Going to post pics in a little later. |

Even nicer - I got it with 2.4 GHz Core2Duo, 4GB Ram and 7200 Rpm Hd :-) Sturdy compared to my old Amilo 4438.

What is the battery life you are getting with your 8710w, and under what kiind of usage conditions? Also, if anyone has the 8710p version, can you answer the same question? Thanks for your time!
