EFFECTIVE cooling for go 7800gtx in Xps Gen2/M170...Is there such a thing??
I know I'm not the first person to have concerns about the temperatures reached in the geforce go 7800 gtx and although they are designed to perform under high temps things are just getting silly now.
After playing games like Farcry and F.E.A.R on max settings at high resolutions the temps will exceed 95 degrees sometimes hitting 98 or 99 even with the fans on full blast. Arctic silver is on its way and I know this will take a few degrees off but its not enough. I also tried a Zalman nc1000 cooler and frankly its useless for really cooling the GPU which is the thing which needs it the most. Are there any other alternatives? Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome. P.s I saw the extreme cooling thread but I don't have the tools or expertise for doing something like that! |

Prop the laptop off of the surface it resides on.

Exactly; having one of those laptop coolers that props up the laptop helps a lot. I've got a BYTECC one and it's got two fans in it that help.
Using thermal grease (e.g. Arctic Silver 5) works wonders. Recently, I cleaned out my XPS Gen 2 and boy was there lots of dust in there. So I clean out both fans and the various heatsinks in the laptop as well. After that, I took off all the heatsinks, lapped them a bit and then spread Artic Silver Ceramique on them and put a tiny drop on the surface the heatsink would lie on. It's worked wonders honestly and I haven't had any crazy heat issues. Heck, I've been Beta testing Hellgate: London and I'm running it at the max resolution without any problems.

Cheers for the replies.
Well I think part of the problem is that the zalman directs the air to the front of the laptop whereas its needed at the back for the gpu and cpu. So you can recommend the cooler you're using then? Also what do you mean by lapping??? As in sanding the heatsinks down? I've already ordered arctic silver 5 which i thought i was going to apply to the core. Shall i put it on the heatsinks themselves then? Ps what is Hellgate: London like? Is there a demo available?

I opened mine for the 1st time in 2 years and there was a lot of dust and fluff around the fan exhausts cleaned all that and then applied artic silver 5 to CPU and GPU.
This reduced my idle temps on CPU and GPU by 10 and 15 degress and under load by 10 and 13 so now my fans rarely go above slow using that i8kfan util |
