Extensa 4620Z USB ports inactive during XP install
Ok, this is odd and any suggestions are appreciated...I have an Acer Extensa 4620Z and I am trying to do a fresh install of XP. I have found all the drivers for XP for this system including the AHCI driver for the serial drive (since the bios will not let me switch to a different mode).
Once I start the XP install, F6 and select the correct driver from the floppy drive connected via USB port all is good. The install sees the hard drive and begins the install. However, once that process starts I am again prompted for the Intel Controller driver and the reason it now does not find it appears to be simply that the USB ports go dead at some point between the initial start of the install and this point. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hey XCore I got the same prob with the exact same laptop. Could they make it any harder to put XP on it....geeeehhhhzzzz... Its like they sabotaged the laptop so we are forced to use Vista, could be a conspiracy who knows......
Anyway, I found this program called nlite which you can incorporate drivers in with XP and then burn it to a bootable DVD.(here's a good tutorial and link to nlite http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...-installation/ This got me past the need for a USB floppy for the driver. Windows starts to install ok at first and then I get an error message that says ... "One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed"..........? I put all the XP drivers in with nlite when I made the 2nd bootable DVD but no go, and just put the SATA driver in the 1st go around and same error message. I read that if theres a Vista driver in with the XP drivers it wont work...so now Im looking for possible Vista drivers in with the XP drivers I got. Sooo....I dont know...what the hay....this is all i got so far and will let u know if i succeed. Fill me in on anything u find out, if u dont mind...Thanks If anybody can help it would be much appreciated! |

Yeah, with that program you chose, I found it quite easy to weed out the Vista drivers, although I can't really remember how I did it at this point. I didn't really like that program and it didn't work for me! Oh well,
, all I can say is that this computer gave me quite a hassle with the "getting of XP on it!" I finally figured out those driver things in that floppy utility with the F6 thing. I chose the one called "Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile)" because the SATA RAID didn't work. I don't under stand why you floppy went out during installation, but I do know that if you have the wrong controller driver, it will ask you one or two dialog box questions with the yellow warning triangle! That is all in the past now since I got XP up a running last night. There are two weird problems that I seem to keep running into with this thing now. First, when it goes to shut down or restart, it will shut down Windows, get to the blue-backgrounded screen and just freeze! When it sets up to go to sleep, well, that's all it does as well! Just sits there at the box saying "Preparing for standby..." WTF is happening? Is there some kinda patch that I am not aware of? Thanks for any help!

i purchased a 4620Z just before christmas. spent two weeks fighting with it, then asked the right question on search engine. you need to go to the bios set up. "F2" on boot up. near the bottom of the first screen is a hard disk option. it comes "ACHI" for vista, change it to "IDE". once i did that, xp loaded with no difficulty. the only problem i still have is finding a driver for the acer power control. it will not turn the screen off. i still had to load the non-vista drivers for sound etc from the acer web site.
