Well, here we go with the delays! I got this email this morning, the day the unit was supposed to be delivered. And it's pretty lengthy delay too, almost 3 weeks...

Quote:
We apologize for being unable to ship your items as planned. We expect to ship your items by 03/28/2008 or earlier. We hope this new arrival date still meets your needs, but if it does not, please let us know by calling Gateway at 800-846-3420 or by replying to this e-mail. If you want to check the status of your order, just go to our order status page or call 800-846-8529.
Thanks again for shopping at Gateway. We're working as hard as we can to ship your order as soon as possible.
Sincerely,

Gateway

Looks like the internet buzz on these laptops have hyped up their sales and they're probably trying to keep up. Hopefully Gateway will recognize the market and continue with their budget beauties.

I haven't canceled the order, but I'm keeping an eye on the Dell website. The sad truth is that Dell isn't offering anything even remotely close in terms of 3D performance and price. I mean, a 2ghz Core 2 Duo w/ Nvidia 8800M Gateway is going to stomp a 2.5ghz Core 2 Quad w/ Nvidia 8600M Dell XPS 1530 at something like Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and the price is about the same.

Sold my Toshiba X205 for the P-171X FX in my sig. I bought a Seagate 200GB 16mb cache Hard Drive and 4Gb G. SKill 667mhz CL4 RAM. Now I'm waiting on the lappy but the expected ship date is 4/18/08!! Not cool. I spoke with a Sales Rep who gave me a good deal on it $2078.95 including tax and a discount on Overnight shipping. Can't wait to the bench the s**t out of this. Does anyone know if any manufacturer will be releasing a slot loading Blu-ray player?

Well, I too have been speaking with their sales people and my order which was supposed to arrive on March 10th, then March 28th, appears now to be schedule for manufacture on March 27th. I asked him "So what's the hold up?" to which he said "Parts". The GPU I'm assuming. Either way I'm getting pissed.

Yea same here. That sux. Which model are you waiting on? I'm assuming its the P-171XL FX version right? Anyways I think the reason why mine is being held up is due to a shortage of penryn chips. The only reason I got a good deal on mine is bcuz of the long delay time. Anyways we should have a stickied thread for those waiting on the P-171 series to guage build and delivery times and not bombard this thread with non-upgrade/mod posts. Who's with me?

Later on I would like to find a WUXGA screen with a faster response time. Most LCDs are about 25ms but I think Asus has a 8ms one and I think the new Dell 1730s also have a low response time. I'll try to dig up some more info on that.

For those are still looking for WUXGA LCD panels, make sure they are not too old since the older WUXGA screens like the ones on the XPS Gen2/M170/9300 are 30% less bright.
Spinitch the new LCDs in the Dell m1730s has an amazing 5ms response time. Look here:

I wonder where we can get one of those from?

Also I've been scouring the net for the best price/performance laptop and for the $2078.95 I spent which includes shipping it can't be beat. There is absolutely nothing this powerful at this price point. I've looked into Dell, Sager, Asus, HP, Sony, Toshiba, you name it I checked. And all I'm adding is a Seagate 200GB 7,200rpm 16mb cache Hard Drive and 4GB G.Skill 667mhz CL4 RAM and the price will still be under 2300 with the upgrades. Also I realized that the WUXGA screen that comes with the P-171X and P-171XL has a matte finish which I'm not too particularly fond of. So I ordered a Glossy LCD protector from NuShield.com for $25 which should change that. All in all I know it will definitely be worth the grueling 4/18/08 wait.

I got it off ebay. You can do a search for the model number and it should come up. I'm getting a blu ray drive coming in soon and swapping that in over the hd-dvd drive. I bought the xbox 360 hd-dvd add-on so I'll be using that instead to watch hd-dvd movies.

Just an update, I got the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Laptop sound card and I highly recommend it. Right now I have it connected to my Bose Companion 2 speakers and with High Def movies, the sound is fantastic. It is much more crisp and livens up music and videos.

Got mine and upgraded. Everything was pretty smooth. I did find changing the screen to be a pain. I pulled the screen from an e1705 and it had a metal bracket underneath that was attached. This fit in the Gateway, but the Dell isn't functioning properly at the moment.

I did a clean load of Vista and put SP1 on. It is very responsive. I am impressed with the rig.

I am going to put a T9300 in here soon. then I will be done. Faster than most people's home machine

My P-171S FX showed up yesterday, so far I'm very pleased. I threw a preview up last night but can't seem to find it now. Either I'm going crazy or perhaps a moderator deleted it or something. It was basically a link to the other tech forum I frequent, so that might have chaffed some balls.
