Question Replacement DVD drive for 9880?

My beloved 9880 has started having DVD read issues. It has recently lost the ability to read the DVD discs that it burns. It can burn and successfully verify both DVD +/-R media and CD-R media. It cannot, however, read the DVD media that it writes and verifies. I get "Windows cannot read from this disc..." errors. Other machines have no problem reading the discs. CD-R still writes and reads correctly.

One clue: It began several weeks ago to make a buzzing/rattling noise when attempting to eject or load new discs.

The failing drive is a Toshiba R6572M TU05. Is there a recommended replacement drive? I'm having difficulty finding an exact match and don't want to risk incompatibility.

Thanks!

Most excellent. Thank you.

Speaking of beggers being choosers , as long as I'm going to be doing surgery, is there a real need to replace the drive with exactly the same model? Does anyone have experience using a better/faster/cheaper device?

Thanks!

No.

The 9860 was available with several drive options, mine uses an NEC slim line drive, but I imagine any slim line CD/DVD drive would work.

Zdroj has a few people on his/her side.
Here's another place to try:

http://www.ultradrives.com/

I used them a few years ago...very knowledgeable. If I recall correctly, the drive had to be set-up a certain way, which was not user-configureable...so you had to know which configuration you needed. They made sure I got the right drive.
