Toshiba m45 S-165 Volume issue Please Help!!!

Hello, I have a toshiba m45 s-165. I think I know to the answer but maybe someone has a better idea. The volume wheel on the front of the laptop has broken and has kinda recessed in the laptop. The problem is I think it was turned all the way down when it broke. I cannot get any sound out of the laptop speakers anymore. I have the volume turned up all the was in the volume control panel but still no sound. Short of replacing the motherboard is there another way to get the volume turned up. Please help!!!!

cheers ...

Hello jgra,
Solution 1:
If it's just the knob broken off, you still may be able to turn the volume up by turning whatever is left over on the center rivet that was holding the knob onto the Volume Control unit. You will need to open the lower case to access the top on the Volume Control unit. This renders it useless for headphone applications but still allows software control.

Solution 2: (my personal favorite)
Acquire a junk motherboard and un-solder the Volume Control unit from that junk board, un-solder the broken one from your good mobo, then finally re-solder the working unit to your good mobo.
CAUTION: Soldering this Volume Control unit requires some finesse.. if you overheat the pins they will transfer the heat inside the unit and ruin the carbon contact disc, now your screwed.

Solution 3:
The Volume Control can be jumpered where it solders to the motherboard so that it's maxed volume left, and maxed volume right. This renders it useless for headphone applications but still allows software control.

Solution 4:
Replace the whole motherboard.. very expensive alternative!
