Sure! That's an easy one! When you go on battery power, by default, your notebook enters a lower-power mode to conserve maximum battery time. On virtually all modern notebooks, the battery settings can easily be adjusted to meet your needs.

For example, the normal/default setting is to turn down the screen brightness somewhat (that is why yours looks "dim") , however, you can easily change that setting to best meet your needs. You can access this either through your battery icon on the right side of the Windows task bar, or through the control Panel.

I appreciate the quick response but there is no feature in the power option icon in the control panel, there has to be another way. Remember my laptop is hp pavillion zx 5000
Thanks

On my dv6625us, which is a Vista notebook (I understand that yours is XP, yes?) I can simply click on the battery icon in the taskbar tray to call up my battery options (and it is in my Control Panel as well)...and it is no different in my wife's Sony Vaio, which is a Windows XP machine...I am sure that it is easily accessed on your zx 5000 as well. Virtually all notebooks have an easy means to control how your computer runs under battery power.

It is always a trade-off between battery life, versus screen brightness, cpu speed, etc. Many/most laptops have some pre-set points you can choose, such as "max performance" or "max power savings" etc., and pretty much all of 'em allow you to create custom settings to your liking.

PeteC is right on the money. you can also simply adjust the screen brightness up manually each time you unplug your laptop via the hot key (Fn+brightness up/down)
