Upgrade optical drive in a G40
The optical drive in a friends Thinkpad G40 has died and we took a look at it, identifying it as Part #92P6104, Panasonic Slim 24x/24x/24x/8x CD-RW/DVD COMBO-IV. I've been looking at prices for a replacement drive and see them in the $175-225 range.
Are there compatible optical drives with improved features that can be installed in replacement of the current model? And how do we determine what is compatible? For example, will a Lenovo Part #41N5643, Ultrabay Slimline Burner, fit and run with proper drivers installed? It seems better to upgrade to a newer drive that does double layer DVD burning and more in addition to standard optical duties for about the same price. Any input is appreciated. Thank you, Joel |
