HP Pavillion dv2700t Special Edition Review

Coming from a slightly bigger laptop (Dell i9100), I wanted something more portable. I decided to try out the HP dv2700t. I haven't had much time to travel w/ it yet, as I only received it yesterday. Shipping via FedEx was great as I received it 3 days earlier from the estimated ship date!

First off, you can customize the dv2700t w/ 5 different Core 2 Duo processors (T5550, T7250, T8100, T8300, T9300). It comes w/ a 14.1" WXGA HD Display (1280 x 800). You also have the options of choosing 2 grapics cards, webcam, fingerprint reader, etc....

So far, I have been pretty impressed w/ the performance. My only gripe is that there's a ton of bloatware! I will do a "clean install" of Vista Ultimate as soon as I obtain a oem version. The only copy I have is the recovery disc(s) that came w/ the unit, and that also obtains all the bloatware that's already pre-installed.

The build and design of the dv2700t has not changed from the earlier dv2000t (which my cousin has). The only thing that sets it apart are the finishes on the lid and plastics (Imprint Finish). HP has come up w/ 2 Imprint Finishes. The "Radiance" finish (found on the standard dv2700t) and the "Virve" finish (found on the dv2700t Special Edition).

From all the other HP reviews about the finish of the product, is that it attracts alot of fingerprints (which i agree). Thankfully, HP has included a cleaning cloth.

The keyboard and touchpad feel good and very responsive. The touchpad also, has a disable button in case you want to use an external mouse.

My laptop also came w/ the fingerprint reader...

and reversible slip case..

The glossy screen on the dv2700t is ok. But when using it in bright environments, I get alot of glare. Whereas w/ my i9100 I didn't. It does however, provide good contrast, great color, and "ok" backlighting.

The Altec Lansing Speakers are great! Almost as loud as my i9100 which includes a subwoofer. The sound is quite clear and crisp. The dual jacks is a plus (no more sharing earphones).

I had minimal fan noise compared to my i9100 which like to run constantly (throttling issues) w/ the prescott.

Overall, I'm happy w/ this notebook. I mainly got this for mobility and multimedia as my i9100 was too heavy. The Core 2 Duo, the layout, and design of the notebook is a plus!!

great review, how's the imprint finish feel? is it smooth or can you feel the shape of the design when you run your fingers across the top? and is there a big price difference between this one and the special edition?

the finish is smooth. as far as the price difference, about a $60-$70 difference. there is also the dv2800t "artist edition". again, the only difference is in the "imprint finish" and it includes a messenger bag and a few extras. also, the geForce graphics card is standard.

nice review.

does the headphones jack (normally the centre one) support optical audio? SPDIF? thats the only thing holding me back...

im planning to moving from a 17" hefty heavy laptop to a 14" powerfull portable laptop.

finally nice to see wifi with "N" cards- shame i had the 104 eror with the atheros in my dv9299.
