Grand Theft Auto - like Gran Turismo - is a game that we have a difficult time integrating into our consciousness. Gran Turismo got this way by being an uncompromising simulation of something we don't care about, a blisteringly high-resolution image of a ketchup packet or a strip of bark. Ketchup fans and bark enthusiasts are going nuts, they'll pay forty dollars for part of the image. I played the second one a million years ago, earned enough money to wash my virtual car, and then quit the series forever.
Grand Theft Auto has had another problem, or rather, we have had a problem that intersects with what the game offers: the raw, virtually limitless opportunity presented is paralyzing, a sheer face with no purchase. We're always impressed by each world's livingness, but historically the story structure - the obvious thread that we can grip and pull ourselves along - is hung about the neck with frustrating, repetitive gameplay. We end up burning out on free roaming in a couple days, taking random missions or sitting in a parking lot listening to the radio. I feel guilty, because there's probably no game more "important" globally than Grand Theft Auto. I certainly feel like I'm looking in on what I consider my own community. It never seemed to bother anyone else that the core of the game wasn't much fun, so mostly the whole thing just makes me feel like a crazy person.
There's been some commentary put forth about whether or not exclusive reviews can be trusted, an absolutely fair avenue of inquiry. Unfortunately, GTA IV's tectonic, continent cracking power makes assessing possible score inflation difficult. IGN's forty page exegesis is distilled down into a ten, Eurogamer says "ten," and surely these are not the only tens we'll see. Gamespy tells us that the game merits five stars, but what is their celestial configuration? Stars may be of ill omen. 1up has given it an A+, which is not a number, making the score less... numeric(?). At some point today, I expect to hit up GameRankings and see a score delivered in degrees Fahrenheit. Boy, that'll be some useful ****ing information. In any case, there's no score higher than ten, and tens or ten equivalents are being dished out by every Tom, Dick, And Harry. If IGN had given it a twelve, scourging them would be much easier.

Sounds about right to me. Or for the stupid:

I cut work early to get home n play.
Got 1/2 way through the intro to story mode and was flooded w/ MP join requests, ignored them, finished intro and checked my friends list.

24 of 25(currently online) friends playing GTA4, 11 MP join requests.

Hopped into MP and played about 4 hours...... mad fun!!!

That said, Im not sure MP has enough legs to Score a 10 on its own, and I dont know how a game can score a 10 without a near perfect online.

That said, GTA4 is really more about story mode, so if it is the shit like its supposed to be, I think that more than can make up for the online not being a standalone 10 easilly.

That said, dont get me wrong, MP was absolute fun and quite often amazing, spectacular. I just dont see much depth to it to keep that will scratch my multiplayer itch over other MP games once Ive finished the story mode. Which is not a super knock on GTA4 here, online mode is no question always been secondary to the main game, as a secondary option it is very impressive, I just dont see it being a long term option (at least in this version).

Ill be jumping on Story mode more tonight, and reserve overall judgment more till I get a little into that atleast.

First thoughts though, Game is way to freaking dark I have everything jacked all the way up and still have issues seeing a lot of things. Also the controls are no were near as good as everyone has been saying. More details later. Plus side though the story is good and I have a GF in game.

"GTA IV has its flaws as a game." (1) "The flow of the game basically goes like this: you watch a cutscene, someone in the cutscene says that someone has done them wrong, you're told they need to be taught a lesson, and then you get in a car and go teach them the lesson. At that point another cinema is triggered and the process repeats. ... it can definitely become a little repetitive." (2)

"It's not like previous GTAs, or most other sequels, where there are new stand-out features that you can easily discuss and rate." (4) "GTA IV [actually] reduces the amount of activities when compared to the previous game, San Andreas. You cannot go the gym to beef up Niko's muscles. And eating a ton of cheeseburgers won't turn you into a massive, wobbly mound of lard." (3)

"You'll probably be surprised to hear GTA IV has noticeably fewer weapons and vehicles on offer than GTA: San Andreas did. ... Yes, this means San Andreas' more unusual vehicles like fighter jets, hovercraft, go-karts and jetpacks are all absent. Don't expect to be wielding chainguns, flamethrowers or chainsaws either." (4) "The world itself is smaller than the state-sized San Andreas" (7) and in general the game has "a feature list that's a step back from its predecessors." (4)

How can a game get 10/10 and have less stuff than its prequel?

Multiplayer is basically free roam on all or a portion of the city, deathmatch, team deathmatch, racing, or objective style gameplay.

I agree way too dark! I found most of the controls good, u-turns on foot are a pain in the ass, definitely not fake ass cpu fps shooter 180's, but prolly f'd up in the opposite direction just as much. Some of the cars handle horrible too. But after I while those things became less of a distraction.

Also MP is kinda fire and forget, you score points(cash) but their is no XP earned or stuff to spend the cash on afaik. But you can create a character, if you dont, some maps match types, have you start off as a woman w/ giant umm bazooms.....

Vehicle/Player (crash/splash dmg)physics is cool, not entirely realistic but very fun

Just to let everyone the average score for the ps3 is %100, this is not just one reviewer but several different ones, also the average for the 360 is %98... but i agree with archalien during the night places a way to dark. It is also fun to use a cell phone and call 911 to get healed =).

GTA IV sells 609,000 in UK on day one

Quote:
Gamers around the world are excited about GTA IV, and in Britain they were so excited that they caused a record sales day. On day one of release in the U.K., GTA IV broke records by selling 609,000 copies. This broke the previous record by more than 100,000 units. Interestingly enough, the previous record was also held by a title in the GTA series, GTA: San Andreas. It sold 501,000 copies on a single day.

More interestingly, the sales for the game, split between the 360 and the PS3, did not heavily favor one console over the other with 335,000 for the Xbox and 274,000 for the PS3. Given how many more 360s are in the field than the PS3, the difference is small and may reflect a changing market for Sony's (formerly) troubled console.

GTA IV online play troublesome for PS3 owners

Quote:

Earlier this week many reports came in that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA IV were experiencing freezing problems, with no comment from Take Two or Rockstar at the moment - Sony just recently did.

The problems keep arising for GTA though. In particular, the PlayStation 3 release is being fingered as more likely to have issues with online play, though with the release so fresh out of the door it's hard to pass judgment.

With so many eager people buying the game and plugging it in the instant they get home, it's possible that Sony servers are having trouble coping with the massive number of connections. This could explain why there aren't reports of the 360 version having similar issues, since Microsoft has had a much longer span of time to mature their online service.

Funny I have yet to have a problem but I only play for about two hours at a time so that may have something to do with it. Saw this on a few other boards you should see what TT is telling PS3 owners to do.

Quote:
Please run through the following, go through in order.
1) Delete the game's install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the game's install information.
2) Delete the game's save files. To delete any save files you will need to do the following. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Save Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, and from the context menu select Delete.
3) Disable your Internet connectivity for the PS3. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Settings' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Network Settings'. Now scroll down to the Internet connection option and press x, now select the disable option. Once this has been done unplug the ethernet cable if you are connecting to the Internet if using this.
4) Disable the console's information board. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Information Board', highlight this and press triangle. From the menu select 'Do not display' Press X to confirm this.
5) Disable Media Server functionality. Scroll to Settings, now scroll up / down to 'Network Settings' select Media Server connection. Once this has been done press triangle and change the option Disabled.
6) Delete all of the system's Internet cache. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Internet Browser', highlight this and press X. Once you browser opens press the triangle button once, from the new menu highlight the 'Tools' option and press X. Scroll down the menu until you reach 'Delete Cookies' and press X. Confirm the files deletion. Repeat this for 'Delete Cache'.
7 ) Turn off the PS3 screen saver. Use the cross media bar to scroll to 'Settings', select 'Display Settings'. Now highlight 'Screensaver' and set this to 'Do not use'.
8 ) Once this has been done, manually restart you PS3 by holding down the power button for 5 seconds it will beep once and then shut down. Release the power button and re-press it and hold for about 5 seconds. The system will then boot and reset all display settings. You will be prompted to reset your display settings to how you require them.
9) Once restarted please try the game again, you will be prompted to reinstall.
Once the game has started please turn off the following features:
1) The game's auto-save. Press Start, Game, and locate the Auto-save option. Turn this off.
2) Turn off the game's flicker filter. Press Start, Display and locate the Flicker Filter option. Turn this off.
