Unhappy Laptop batteries shortages and backorders

In case you are having trouble getting a laptop battery from BatteryFuel or any other vendor here is some news from last month that I forgot to get out.

===

CATASTROPHIC FIRE AT MAJOR LAPTOP BATTERY FACTORY CAUSES PRODUCT SHORTAGES, PRICE INCREASES

A March 3rd fire at South Korea's second-largest battery manufacturer (LG Chem) is causing a shortage of lithium-ion batteries around the world. The fire damaged part of the plant's assembly lines, boiler room and air controlling facility with an estimated stoppage cost at about $84.5 million in lost revenue. Prior to this crippling catastrophe, it was estimated that LG Chem produced approximately one-third of the industry's laptop batteries worldwide.

The fire has affected both large manufacturers Dell and Hewlett-Packard, along with many smaller companies such as Asus and Acer. Asus estimates that the fire could affect up to 40% of their laptop shipments, while Dell has already stated that the shortage has caused a significant increase in battery prices.

LG Chem had originally stated that it could take anywhere from two to three months to repair the facility and get back to full production, however it has recently been revealed that the shortage won't be over until sometime in late 2008.

Things appear to be on the up and up for our suppliers. I'd say the supply is good. But I promise you that if we don't have it our competition does not either
