Compman55 is a n00b, but everyone loves n00bs!
Installed an A64 3700+ Newark in a 7405GX, you can too, m6805 thur m6811!

Well folks, I finally got around to installing a 3700+ newark in my 7405GX. The benefits to using this CPU is the added SSE3 instructions, faster clock speed, less overall battery draw, and less overall temperature generated, not to metion the ever so slight real life performance increase. The key is to have a motherboard with an "NS" version bios. If you have a Gateway laptop with a BIOS version on NS.00.05 which is what came on the 7426GX and some 7422GX, or if not, you can flash your chip with this version and have instant support of a newark core (3700+). Sorry you cannot run a Turion64, oh well.

If you have an emachines m6805, m6807, m6809, m6810, m6811 and have a bios version of NSF03.P00 or NSF04.P00, you will need to send your BIOS chip away to www.biosman.com to get the Gateway NS.00.05 flashed onto it, or simply buy a new chip from them already flashed. If you have the factory emachines operating system installed, you will need to do a small hack PRIOR to flashing to a Gateway bios or windows will be stuck in activation mode thinkning it is a different computer. I don;t have the info on this currently but you can certainly google it yourself.

If you have a Gateway laptop 7405GX, thru 7422GX and do NOT have that lastest bios but have a NS.00.01, NS.00.02 you will also have to send your chip away or buy a new one. The chip type installed on "NS" based motherbaords will not allow flashing and there is no way around it. Not thru linux, not thru windows, not thru dos. You need a PLCC programmer. If someone knows of a trick around this, please let me know.

The PLCC chip you will need is the following:

SST
39VF040
70-4C-NH (or NHE)

I found that NON NS boards all have a different chip number shown below:

SST
39LF004
33-4C-NH

I am not sure if this chip will work in the NS boards, but I do know these chips allow flashing thru windows (Winphlash) and dos. If you install this chip in an NS board, one member claimed it would overheat and burn out. I cannot confirm this, and have never tried it, but there is a reason they used a different model PLCC chip.

Lastly, If you have a Gateway latop with a bios ver of 52.00.?? or emachines 0F0?.P00 bios, you cannot use the newer bios or CPU. You are limited to a 3400+ Clawhammer. You may find someone who can edit binary and extract the CPU microcode out of the NS bios version and insert it into the NON NS bios roms, but I cannot find a utility that works with our compressed Pheonix roms. Plus the NS bios has a different vendor list so compatiblity may be questionable.

If you need the NS.00.05 bios rom file, visit FiZi's website here:
http://emachines.fizi.ca/bios.php

If this thread becomes dated and his website no longer exists, email me at Compman55 at aol dot com and I will always have it.

**Update 7/11/08**
Sorry I forgot to mention about the processor drivers. You need to let windows find your new processor and then reboot. On Vista, its automatic. On XP, I had to remove and reinstall.

Also if you don;t want to hack windows, you can use a 7405gx restore dvd on your emachines after you flash to the gateway bios but you will have install the correct modem drivers for you model. Some use a conexant and others use a smartlink. Be sure which one you have a both will install universally but your modem will not dial if it is the wrong driver.

BTW, Vista did not like the change. A restart IS required or you mouse will be very laggy, sound will be cracking, and stuff will open real slow. Once it installs the processor driver, all seems well.

if you are planning to program roms by yourself i may suggest to use any device search tool to find which companies programmers are supporting your chips. There are even really cheap programmers on the market. Here is an example for you guys to have an idea.

I searched for SST39VF040
http://www.xeltek.com/device_search/...=SST&company=0

You may search for other chips:
http://www.xeltek.com/device_search/....php?company=0

I am pretty sure you may find this device search tool on all programmers company's websites...

Has anoyne tried a Sandiago core used in the 7525gx in the older 7400 or 6800 models? Newarks only go to 4000+.

No ill effects found running this combo. However many have emailed me regarding the use of a 4000+ which is the fastest newark core, and also have been asked about support using a genuine emachines bios.

To answer this, generally in my days of bios modding, CPU microcode is based on the core revision and not so much on speed, so I can only assume it will work. Finding a 4000+ is kind of hard, and still $100. If someone wants to give it a try, let us all know how it works out.

Regarding the emachines bios, I cannot find the appropriate modding utilities that allow you to view the code. There was a memeber that was very close to getting the bios up and running on a turion, but I have not seen him around. For now we are stuck with the NS.00.05.

k, so after reading this through a few times, tell me if I'm correct here. I have a M6805 currently running Targa 0F09.P00. This means nothing above 3400+?
