New laptop lower expectations
I have just purchased a Toshiba Satellite L305D. I have been playing World of Warcraft for many years now on a variety of computers. I have built my last few desktops for gaming which I now currently have, specs are as followed:
AMD Athlon 6400+ Black Edition x2 OC to 3.5ghz 4gb OCZ ram 800mhz Raptor HDD Two 3870's in Crossfire This setup runs WoW at around 100fps on all max AA/AF and full shadows. Which are the big killers in fps when playing WoW. I wanted to bring my gaming eexperience on the go with a new laptop but kind of short on money this christmas so I used my past computer configuring knowledge and hunted for the best price / performance ratio under 600 dollars and came up with a Toshiba Satellite L305D the laptop specs are: AMD Turion x2 @ 2ghz 3GB ram 533mhz 320gb HDD ATI Radeon 3100 256mb Dedicated Vram and Shared up to 1519MB Windows Vista Home 32 bit The real concern I am having here is that even though the GPU is rated for entertainment and semi-casual gaming it should be able to hold WoW above 30fps on high with no AA/AF and Shadows, yet it cant, in northrend and even in outlands it drops to 15ish and It is well above the recommended specs for the game. So does anyone have any suggestions or reasons why the fps is so low on a finely spec'd laptop for the job. I have also ran it on all low and still have fps drops to around 20 in northrend and I cannot stand playing below 30fps it is just a annoyance.I am also thinking of reverting to xp pro 32bit just to see if that will help at all. So if anyone has any comments on the matter please reply back. Last edited by Syferis; 01-05-2009 at 02:48 PM. |

If you have JUST purchased the notebook, you may still be able to return it for a refund. With video cards, you need to look at the hundreds digit of the model number. You've got a couple of 3870s in your gaming rig, the 8 indicating its performance level (high end). The performance level of the GPU in the notebook you just bought is 1, or low-end. If you want to play WoW at more acceptable framerates, you'll need a notebook with at least a 4 performance level (low midrange), which would mean an ATI 3450 or Nvidia 9400 or better
