That is a cool mod job!

Wondering if one can use other leds, when one does not have the back lit lcd.

You can actually. You need to buy slim LEDs that can be powered by a USB connector I believe.

Yep, but the trick is to feed the cable leading to it, using internal tinkering at the usb power outlet from the board; since the LCD cable is tight fit as it is, pushing through the hinges.

It will be an interesting weekend job
