ASUS N81VP-C1 CPU overclocking question

Hi.

Just unboxed my new mobile FarCry 2 station and after I`ve installed W-7 couldn`t help to start looking @ the tweaking possibilities with this little performer. I found some GPU o`c guides but absolutely nothing about CPU . I thought that ASUS actually supports this side of the coin. BIOS, nothing...system tab, nothing...overclock keyboard shortcut ....thing . Did they forget or do I have to get something like a X9100 and would it work with it after all? Tnx for your feedback

I actually like the fact that the GPU is being allowed to be "officially" tweaked, rather than the CPU. Use it stock for a while and see. Oh and don't forget - review and benchmarks to share

cheers ...

Asus only has an automatic CPU overclocker on some models. I think at the moment, it's only on their G series and W90 notebooks.

Tnx for a tip. Will definitely give it a try . So far, the first benchmark I ran under W7 scored as such...

Not bad for a 14 incher .
1366x768 in Far Cry2 all on very high plus 4xAA without a hiccup. I will give it a try on my 24" LCD soon to see how it holds in 19x12... The review is in works hopefully this coming weekend but will post some o`cd numbers soon. Hopefully will get hands on some x9100 (at least ES version)

PS: just noticed it says "generic VGA" in the 3D Mark results, hmm, how peculiar

O`Ced GPU ATI Mobility 4650 @ 673 Core and 749 MEM

It would let me go to 720 Core according to a tool but that`s beyond Radeon Mobility 4670 mark...will not go there yet
Set FSB doesn`t work for me . Perhaps the memory is the weak link in this case...it sucks that it is O`Cing the MEM clocks too Hope is with the X9100 now

You might want, if having time, submit your benchmarks here to store in NBF database :-)

nah, what's the better way to add to the thunder roars by seeing one's works showing up on Google Search ;-) and at the very first page of NBF.

And I am thrilled that the man is happy with his investment!

cheers ...

Luck run HWMonitor. It gives CPU,GPU and HDD temps. What is cool about is it shows current lowest and highest temps. So turn it on play your game and when you stop see how high temps peaked. Very nice for setting OC based on heat.

That is a very nice GPU OC. If heat is not a factor go higher!

But at least for me I do not keep my system OC'd unless I want the performance. It is a notebook why OC 24/7 if going to search the WEB. If going to game? Crank it up. Just thoughts.

Question

Tnx for suggestion, Powerpack. Will get the benchmark uploaded, qhn, this weekend. CPUid aka HWmonitor is a fine tool. My last bench was GPU core 700, mem 800, all stable @ 77 degrees. You`re right, this guy is really happy with this particular ASUS lappy. Now just to figure out the PPL number to overclock the CPU. X9100 ES is still a paycheck away which reminds me, does anybody know if the Extreme Edition enables BIOS multiplier mod just as i.e. Gateway P series laptops? And regarding the PPL number, is it a character string printed somewhere on the motherboard, some specific location perhaps?
Thanks for your excellent support, NBF.

x9100 Core Extreme impressions

Finally got it. It`s Spec# SLB48...could be called OEM. You can see my 3DMark score below (GPU@710 and GDDR@805). Frankly, I am bit dissappointed. It started with the upgrade itself where this particular lappy is little bit modder unfriendly. It requires you to remove GPU in order to completely unscrew the heatspreader. ASUS is known for lack of repair manuals availability so you could picture yourself how frustrating was to find that last screw hidden under GPU which is fastened with four screws itself. It`s not that bad once you figure it out though.
Than came the shock. NO OVERCLOCKING ENABLED IN BIOS FOR X9100 CORE2EXTREME. So I ran the benchmark under stock settings X9100=3.1Ghz with max. possible the GPU allows without errors and artefacts. I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE MOBILITY 4650 IS A HELL OF A OVERCLOCKER. To conclude this mess I must say that X9100 will go and I will stick with some more efficient P series CPU. Just compare the results to those above and you`ll understand that this CPU could do way better inside bigger laptops such as G51 or ware. 3DMark screen follows:

Btw, the temps were CPU close to 60 and GPU 80 degrees Celsius. Still think the laptop is exceptional portable gaming powerhouse.
PS: If you know about some tricks to make the O`C in Bios happen, please, don`t keep it to yourself.
