Toshiba P505D-S8930 Multimedia
Toshiba P505D-S8930
Taunted as a multimedia portable notebook, this machine performs well and comes packed with attractive gadgets and design in Fusion Finish™ with Sonic Pattern in Black Onyx. I am not sure about the portability claim, since it is quite heavy to lug around. The 18.4" is clear and offers nice viewing, a bit disappointed with the resolution of 1680x945 and 720p. ![]() Specifications: Operating Systems: Genuine Windows Vista® Home Prenium 64 bits, with free upgrade to Windows 7. Manual, quick setup Looks & Design Being different to other models of just a flat solid color, Toshiba introduced its Fusion Finish on the P505D with its sonic pattern in black onyx. Light pinstripe patterns can be seen on a glossy black background of the lid. The keyboard is large and comfortable with a full number pad. The LCD feels solid even with the large size, not so flappy as with my Gateway p7811FX. As with any glossy cases, this notebook collects a lot of fingerprints. Overall, the P505D is a nice-looking package at a good price of around 700USD. ![]() Screen: The 18.4-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1,680x945 native resolution, a bit odd for a screen this size. But then many 17" LCDs come with 1440x900 instead of the "standard" 1900x1200. Despite the lower resolution, the screen offers good color performance, brightness, and dynamic range. ![]() Keyboard The keyboard is large and comfortable with a full number pad. The keys are flat like a chiclet-style keyboard, and confortable to type on. To the left of the keyboard is a set of backlit touch-sensitive media controls, the power button, and an Eco mode key, claiming to significantly cuts back on power usage. This is being done from cutting back on display brightness and other nonessential features. ![]() Touchpad It is of a wide footprint, responsive and comfortable. But it took me a while to get used to it, since it is flushed with the palm rest and not standing out. ![]() Multimedia Keys As in above Features section: . CD/DVD Buttons (Play/Pause, Stop, Prev Track, Next Track), . eco (Energy-saving mode) button, . TouchPad™ pointing device with multi touch control, . 104 key US keyboard with 10-key pad, . Media button, . Mute button ![]() Wireless Performance– Good connectivity, with its ability to quickly find and connect to the home network. Optical Drive The double layer supporting DVD drive performs flawlessly and quietly Sound Surprisingly very good due to its built-in harman/kardon® stereo speakers. Heat and Noise It is quiet and cool for a big notebook. ![]() ![]() Gaming Performance So far it is performing well with my CoD4, WoW and Command and Conquer - flawlessly to say the least. System Performance Music listening, Video watching, Photoshop run beautifully with this machine. Contrary to what I have read from other reviews on the net about "poor/slow" performance, this model can do very much what I have thrown to it so far. Input and Output Ports Front: LEDs include AC power light, ON/OFF light, Battery light, HDD light and Bridge Media Adapter light. A wireless antenna on/off switch along with indicator light. ![]() Right Side: . Microphone jack . Headphone jack/S-PDIF . 2xUSB ports . Modem Port . RGB (Monitor) port . DC in . Security lock slot. ![]() Left Side: . Network port . eSata/USB combo port (USB Sleep and Charge) . USB port . HDMI port . Express card slot . Optical drive. ![]() Rear: . 2 cooling vents. ![]() Bottom: . Memory cover in the middle . Battery lock and battery release ![]() Gaming Possibilities Decent to good. System Performance ![]() Battery Life A lousy 1-low 2 hours performance. But then with the weight, might as well just leave it on the desk and plugged in at all time. Pros: . Good price. . Decent to good system performance . Quiet Operation Cons: . Heavy . Low battery performance. Conclusion: Good price system for a large screen not-so-portable notebook.
