the ONLY thing keeping me from getting one is the off-center touchpad and numberpad...... and I have an 8662 and love IT! What's the performance improvement vs. an np8662?

The 8690 is a big step forward from the 8662, as it is configured for the New Intel i7 Clarksfield platform and Calpella Rig processors. It is also compatible with 1333 mhz memory.
