new HD in my thinkpad T42

I formatted and copied my hd and new one showed up in MY Computer as E drive and in device manager as Samsung HC160. when I put in prime HD slot it showed Operating system missing. I went into bios and it showed up as HD 2 and said it would only boot if opened by administrator. how do I get new HD to boot? Thanks in advance!

Would you expand the "copied my hd" remark? Cloned the old one? Or install it new outside the T42? Is this "new" copied drive password protected?

cheers ...

Sorry! I used a rocketfish transfer kit with their software to format and copy my hard drive to a new Samsung 160. I assume the software cloned the hard drive as all the folders show up when I click the icon E in my computer. but when I place the new HD in the HD bay it shows : Operating system missing. In the bios it shows HD1 and down at the bottom it states HD2 not bootable unless adminisator opens it????

It probably missed transferring the boot sectors over. I never use the Rocket Fish transfer kit, so I can't comment on that.

Still have the original drive? Try downloading Acronis and use the trial version/period to transfer (clone) the whole drive over to the larger one via an external housing, then just pop it in to the notebook. That is what I always use when upgrading my system to a larger drive.

cheers ...

OK! I am using Aconis cd to open (another thread said with thinkpads you should put the new drive in the computer and the old drive in a transfer kit) when I opened the acronis it showed to click either Back up or Recovery I chose backup.
In the bowse window it shows in the left column
New volume C and below it shows IBM Preload D
Do I click C or D? My inclination is to click C ?????
Thanks in advance

Sounds logic to me, if the old drive is in the transfer kit and the new one is in the comp.

Is this transfer kit like an external USB housing?

cheers ...

YES! now I find i could only go so far then a window came up and said; The procedure you are trying to do can not be done on the trial version. you must go to a vendor and purchase the full version. what good was the trial version????

http://www.acronis.com/download/

Get the 9.0 Home version. The trial should allow you to clone the original drive to an external USB housing with no issue.

cheers ...

Bummer, I guess they learned from customers that were using the trial for one-time shot. I need to update this information with my follow-up sheet. Sorry about that.

cheers ...
