How does a sata drive get powered by a esata connector?
I have a studio 1537 and want to connect a sata drive thru
esata connector but want to know how does it power up the drive before I buy the connector? |

If the eSATA port is already present on notebooks, it will draw power from within the system. If it is an adapter, it would be best that you get an extra power unit for it.
Depending also the size of the external drive and housing, some of them would require external power to feed the housing. cheers ...

eSATA ports DO NOT provide power as part of their standard. Any eSATA drives you plug in will have to be powered either by an AC/DC adapter or by a USB to 5VDC connector. The Dell Latitude E Series laptops use a special eSATA/USB hybrid connector that lets the USB half of the port power the eSATA Drives. This special port is NOT part of any standard. In fact the USB portion of that eSATA port has to provide more than the standard 500mA of USB in order to power an eSATA Optical drive.
