bagedtaco is a n00b, but everyone loves n00bs!
need some direction!

i've got a gateway mp8708.

The motherboard is dead and the cheapest replacement i have found is $300. I tryed to post in the f/s - wtb section but can't.

so my quetion is, should i buy another laptop with a smaller processor and swap the t7200 into it? I like this laptop cuz it runs xp and all the new ones are "7".
What do you think?
Model to consider?
Brand?

I personally would try to get another one and use the broken one for part (or sell it in parts eventually).

But it all depends on what you are willing to invest at the moment for repair or replacement, in order to set an eye on a new comp.

cheers ...

If budget is a restriction I can understand keeping old things going. If hanging on to XP is the real issue I question the soundness of that? Are you going to avoid new OS for 4 years until M$ releases new? When they do is it going to be a dud like Vista (not my opinion I like Vista) or what? If it is latter I feel you are fighting an inevitability you cannot change. I caution fighting what you cannot change, as it will accrue costs that ultimately will be wasted as you will be forced to upgrade to what you tried so hard to avoid.

Just thoughts and words are free so I threw a few extra in. Good luck in your choices.

I've search for the M/B and the best price was $300 range. Most are in the 700+ price range, and i am not gonna pay that. as far as looking for a new laptop, i was wanting something i could swap the t7200 into. but most of the new laptops are running P socket M/Bs and the t7200 is a M. If i could find a new one with a M socket i would buy it and go from there, but i don't think it's worth the trouble at this point. I have been considering just parting it out now.

as far as OS's, I love xp, and yea i need to get with the program and get current. but i do us this for work on occasions and 7 is not supported at this time.

Any suggestions on a new laptop? brand,processor,...? I am looking to spend 7-800 and know there are lots of options at that price range. I was looking for a 16-17" screen as i have a netbook for traveling.

i went to fry's and looked at a few sony's with blue-ray, for the 900 price range.
TIA.

$900 Sony notebooks are not bad price. Any specific models that you were looking at?

cheers ...

Blu-ray, LED LCD ... very good. Sony is being very competitive in price lately.

I see the offer at Staples of $100 more, but it comes with 2 years support and many 50% discount on Office and HP printer as well.

cheers ...
