M90 gfx card died

It has finally happened, my graphics card has after 3.5 years of steady and faithful use, finally given out.

Since a picture says more than thousand words, here is two:

What happens next? I have put Arctic Silver on the GPU, more than 3 years ago, so if anything it extended the GFX's lifespan, will Dell still give me fuss about this? This is the infamous G91 series with the production fault, so i have kind of wating for this to happen.. And i have more than 1.5 year left on my NBD warranty..

So what happens next? Just a matter of a quick replacement of the GPU? I really like the M90 and do not want a new laptop, ironically--but i need this sorted asap.

Give them a shout and hope for the best. Hopefully just another GPU swap, and it is hard to know if the part is available on 3+ years old system.

Try to clean out and applying new thermal paste in between waiting? Does work sometimes.

cheers ...

Yeah, thats what I'm afraid of, if there is any spares around, especially here in Perth, nowhereland Australia.

The new Dell laptops are frigging ugly, and the worst that could happen is an upgrade to a modern M6400, its nice in specs and all that--but butt ugly in design--and i have desktops for gaming, and servers for where cpu cycles are needed, the M90 provides me with everything i really need. And it just has that look that never grows old.. i love my laptop

(if i wanted a new one i would have bought one, but none since this one has touched me in 'just that right spot', if you know what i mean )

I just had a cleanout of the fans and fan grills about a month ago, and the temps are still under 50 degrees on regular use, so its definitively not a temperature issue.

And thats not the worst part, this is in the middle of my exam period, and on top of that i leave the country for international travel in less than two weeks. this could have litterally not happened at a worse time.

Thats just the thing i did not want to hear Hope Dell got some FX2500/3500 hidden away somewhere..

If you had the opportunity, request the M6300 as a replacement instead. Looks practically the same but it doesnt have a subwoofer. In the meantime, the computer should still be somewhat usable in safe mode I imagine.

Yeah, just had the pleasure of talking to a technician, the chat really sucks compared to phone support. He would call me back in a few days (never mind my NBD, and that this is URGENT) and would request a new gfx and motherboard. he had nfi if the parts were availiable, thus the long wait. this is really unacceptable.

Well, not tried safe mode. but the screen is so full of artefacts even during the GRUB bootloader that it makes it hard to use. starting windows normally makes the screen go black, and starting linux works--until i starts the xserver, then it just crashes and burns in a sea of flashing artefacts.. until the nvidia driver terminates with a screen filled with
"(EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed."
"(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** ABORTING ***"
repeated over and over.

This truly sucks. And i cant wait for Dell to ship random parts from random parts of the world. I need this sorted asap

The M6300 would actually be a good replacement, it looks just the same, but has a 64bit chipsset so i would get around the 3.5GB issue..

Well see what Dell manages to find in their box named "old and retired computer parts"

Please do tell me Dell, what is the point of me paying horriffic amounts for NEXT BUSINESS DAY support, suppord i paid for BECAUSE i can not afford the downtime--just to not get urgent support when i need urgent support. Does that not make the NBD support kind of a moot point?

Still not a single word from Dell, neither by email or by phone. This is a breach of my SLA. What has happened to Dell?

I have proposals to write, work to do.. NBD my ass.
