Stupid Best Buy

My top left hinge formed a cracked on my M6805 and Best Buy refused to take it back because of it being 2.5 weeks old instead of the 2 week warranty!!! Now I have to send it to E-Machines...figures. This, though, still does not hurt my satisfaction with the machine, for the crack is just looks, but the thing runs better then I had ever expected...

My machine also has a crack near the left hinge.I called Emachines since I bought extra warrenty through them, but they said the extra warrenty doesnt cover cosmetics. They want a 160 some bucks to fix it.I think I'll wait until I cant open and close my laptop. Then send it in.

It seems just to be cosmetic...

As far as I can tell its just cosmetic, but it still seams ugly to me...If you happen to own norton ghost, you can easily create an image of your hard drive if needs be. I'm not sure what Best Buy's policy on data is, but I doubt they'll let you switch the HD (If you did buy it from best buy, and if you did, two weeks is the warrranty period). If you want emachines to deal with it, they don't (as far as I was informed) replace the machine but just the part...So if you could send it into them, they should leave the data alone (I personaly would still remove personal stuff such as emails...). But thats if you could get them to accept it (depends on who you talk to).

Bestbuy will not allow you swap the hard drive. I know I asked them if they would so I would not loose all my data, when they replaced my laptop. they said no.
Backup anything you can't replace prior to taking it back.

From what I'm told, its a stress crack...

If your monitor goes up and down easily, it shouldn't form a crack. The unlucky few of us got monitors too tightly fastened and it put to much press on the plastic, giving us a pretty little crack. Luckily, though, I'm getting emachines to fix it (got the box to send it back in right next to me)

I got them to do it for free!!!

I talked to Dave, and they said it was covered by the warranty...others though say they were turned down, I guess it just depends on who you talk to...

any updates on the cracked monitor hinge issue? i have a crack on the outer hinge to the right of the power button. the part of the hinge that is attached to the screen. is it superficial or does the screen really pivot on that plastic? i looked at weresharks pics and the screen is attached to two metal hinges on the base but i cant tell if the screen has a metal hinge also or if its just that ****ty plastic. thanks

Well come to think of it my 1 month old M6805 has also developed a crack on the left monitor hinge. It's about an inch long and so far doesn't seem to be too deep. It's past BB return period, what luck have folks had with eMachines on this issue?

A common flaw

Seems pretty interesting that most of the cracks are on the left side. Based on the number of folks reporting problems in this forum, I'm guessing that there are many more M680X notebooks out there with cracked hinges.

The only thing I am worried about in getting it fixed is that the screen I have is pixel perfect. And I am sure to fix this issue, they would just bolt on a new screen.

I guess I'll wait and see what develops.

Im going on roughly three weeks now since BB replaced my 6809. So far the hinge has not shown any signs of cracking. However I do not close the screen much anymore, unless Im going to take it with me.

Curtisdr:: I wouldn't worry to much about the pixels. Both my original and now the new one, have no dead pixels that I can detect. I think emachines seems to do good in this area.
