If one best buy will not take it back, take it back to another store.. The problem is, they really have no standard to determine what counts as abuse, and what counts as a defect, so it's really up to the person you talk to.. Best Buy is supposed to replace these laptops if defective during the period of the manufacturer's warranty.. THeir return policies are so complex though, that not even most employees understand them.. If you don't have another best buy in your area, try to exchange it another day, and speak with another person.

Beware!!!!!

Sent My M6805 In To Get The Left Hinge Fixed And I Now Have A New Lcd
That Has A Dead Pixel!!!! I Cant Believe That They Would Replace A Little Piece Of Plastic With A New Lcd... I Am Pissed And I Know That There Is Nothing That I Can Do About It. I Would Rather Have The Cracked Hinge Than A Dead Pixel. Oh Well You Live And Learn...

Wow, I just looked at the hinges on my 6809... BOTH are cracked!! I really really don't want to send this back (especially since it seems like I'll end up with a new LCD). Is it pretty well established that all they will do is change the monitor or will I get an entirely new machine? I have spent way too much time installing, OC'ing vid card etc to get a new system and start over....

The left hinge on my M6809 has since cracked. I have simply learned to accept it.

New LCD

That's what I was afraid of. Getting a new LCD with bad pixels. And really, what better way for them to get rid of those screens with bad pixels than to put them on repaired notebooks? Nice going eMachines.

When I look at my cracked hinge, you can see that it extends from the outside down into the inside part of the pivioting mechanism. I don't see anyway for them to fix this without replacing the complete screen. Really burns me up.

I guess the question is, do we think that eMachines has resolved this issue or is it possible that I'll just have a cracked hinge on the new one in a few weeks?

First off, greetings to all here, this is my first post.
Yep, here's another user who ended up with a cracked left hinge.
I purchased the 3 year performance plan through Best Buy. I took it back and they said since the laptop is so new and they're not getting parts for it they gave me a new one on the spot. Best Buy DID allow me to keep my old hard drive, so they saved me from reinstalling everything, backing up and everything.
I feel for the ones that went just with the eMachines warranty and now have to pay out of pocket for this repair. The main reason I purchased the Best Buy extended plan was for their darn good dead pixel replacement policy.

Better safe than sorry I always say

Exact same problem, and this is my second one. The second one got a crack in exactly the same spot the first one did. I didn't photograph the first one but I'm going to photograph this one for comparison.
Those of you that are saying it's cosmetic, are you absolutely certain? It looks like if it continues to worsen, it won't be cosmetic. Besides, I don't think anyone that spends that kind of money should be expected to just accept a defect.

Suggestions please!!!!!!1

I spoke to emachines about the dead pixel issue after i sent the laptop in to repair the monitor hinge. the said that they would fix it. anybody have any suggestions. the dead pixel is very small and only noticeable to an anal eye. it is in a quadrant, so do i send it and i hope the dumb tech guy will pay close enough attention to find the pixel and replace the lcd. also, how bad would it be if i did send and got a new one with even more dead pixels... and input/experience....

As one of the other posters noted, the crack appears to expand as the screen is either opened or closed. So the thought was that it was structural.

I just went to my local Best Buy and looked at the 6805 they have on display. It had a crack on the left hinge as well. All these left hinge cracks can't be a coincidence.

My Best Buy extended warranty would probably allow me to return my current unit, but another thread suggested that the BB warranty would only allow one unit to be replaced. I'd hate to use it on another 6805 and end up with the same problem. I may wait until they don't have a 6805 to replace it, then hope that they have resolved the issue with the 10/11 series.

I just looked at mines and it got a crack also. I checked it when I first got it and no problems(cracks), now about 1 month later and there is about a half inch crack.

With laptop closed, looking at it from the back side where you plug into the mic, there is a crack to the left of the hinge. Crack isn't on the left hinge, its left of that hinge on the plastic. Seems like its just cheap plastic, cracking already after one month of use, I got the 3yr warranty from Best Buy so I'll wait till it gets worser and try to convince someone there it wasn't my fault.

Would you mind directing me to that topic?
I don't think this is true, I suggest you check with Best Buy.

To those who have cracks, how tight is your lcd when you open it and close it? I guess theres really no gauge to tell what is tight or not, but can you hear any stress coming from the hinges when you open and close it?

I was a bit off. The specific quote was: "* This Plan is fulfilled when a product is replaced after the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty."
