I know this for a fact. ALL of the hinges in the m680X series are going to crack sooner or later. I don't know how or if emachines will permanantly fix the problem. We can only keep our fingers crossed.

Just found your forum thread via a friend. He has a 6805 with no cracks but waiting for them. I have the 6809 and noticed the crack 3 weeks ago. It is on the right side and looks just like the pics in your photo gallery. I called eMachines and they sent out a return box. The eMachines support guy on the phone gave me the song and dance about wear and tear, I asked if he was done reading his lines and to get real. I have been sitting on returning it for the fears you all have mentioned (diff machine components, dead pixels, etc...) So I wait....... The return box makes a great card table though for my kids :-)

What I don't understand is if you return it, what's going to stop it from cracking again.
eMachines needs to re-engineer a solution. I'm going to wait until mines 11 months old and then try to send it back. Maybe they'll have the problem fixed by then.

You are making assumptions. You don't know that eMachines WILL fix it as many of the people in this thread have said eMachines told them is was cosmetic and wouldn't do anything about it.

I'm assuming that due to the number of people returning them because of the crack, that eMachines will stop BB from just swapping them, and force them to repair them. That's why I didn't wait.

Since I've now gotten a laptop thru work, I'll probably be putting the *09 up for sale.

that is if they let you return it....some people have said that emachines considers it a cosmetic issue and will do nothing about it. I wonder what is cosmetic about a moving part....

MasterSlayer63 is cool enough to have people show up to his/her party!
But if they set up a return for it, don't they have to fix it? My tech knew nothing about the issue, and set up a return. I got the box today.

I am now a duel crack hinge victim! ARGHGHG! Just got home and examined my left hinge in sunlight and it too has a small stress crack forming from mid-hinge. Interesting it does not start in either direction. Cracks widen with closing of screen and (duh) squeeze together with opening. So now I have both hinges cracked and a RMA box all warmed up for a Kinkos/FedEx delivery.

I might be, however it's people like you who will get everyone screwed in the future cause you got 4 notebooks that all had cracks cause you couldn't wait a few months till they said what they were going to do. You already know that E-machines is RMA'ing these, there's no chance they are gonna stop that now, trust me.....the ball has been rolling long enough to ensure that. All i am saying is that i can wait several months with a little crack rather than wait 2 weeks every month for a new LCD replacment cause i couldn't deal with a cosmetic issue.

I'm gonna wait it out. If the crack becomes an issue with the way the NB was meant to be used, than i will consider RMA. At this point there isn't a point to sending it in, just listen to how many ppl have the crack, and how it developed within the first few months they owned it, just bound to happen again with replacment. And on top of that, i am not returning mine to BB cause i was lucky enough to get a 5400rpm drive on my 6805, and i don't want to lose that

For the time being i'm content watcing everyone bitch about it while i cover mine with a little tape. I'm not trying to say i don't mind the crack, and that i'm not upset it's there, but come'on people, why put yourself through multiple NB's that will crack when you can wait a bit and see where this goes? Everyone is calling, everyone is e-mailing, forums are blowing up about this, somethings gonna give here.

I went to BB yesterday to send my laptop in to get it repaired since I couldn't exchange it for the same model and the tech guy looked up the info and said, this is interesting, they are not repairing them so you can exchange it for a new one. Apparently, the night before, eMachines changed their status. So I decided to go back to Toshiba and swapped it out for that. Not quite as powerful or game worthy but hopefully better built. I tried to get store credit so I could buy one in the near future or buy one from somewhere else but they wouldn't let me do that, which was fine since I found one that is almost as good.

I am in your shoes. As long as it isn't functional, I'm in no hurry to fix it until it can actually be fixed. However, I am glad everyone else is calling and emailing. That way they know the extent of the problem.

Very strange. I know for a fact that the status was "DEVO" (replacement) since at least 7/4/04 at my local BB. This is making me wonder if the repair/replace status is different for each BB. Any ex-Best Buy folks out there?

Also, what Toshiba did you get?

I was issued an RMA but I'm kinda concerned now because my screen is PERFECT (pixel wise). Do you HAVE to send it in once an RMA is issued?

I don't think so, it's not like they WANT to send you replacment parts/labor at THEIR cost.......rofl

I'm sure you can wait if you wanted to, and i would think that was a wise decision myself, at least until they get a solution to the problem.
