Anyone who uses an unknown "free" antivirus/antispyware/antimalware/registry scanner and cleaner do so at your own risk.
Personally i research the performance of any program i use regardless of whether or not its free.
It comes down to this for me:
will it find problems, and will it clean them?

Here is a resource: VB100 Award ( to receive the VB100 a product must do 3 things)
https://www.virusbtn.com/Session-ee6...e2/vb100/index

1. detect all in the wild malware.
2. report no false positives.
3. do it in the default settings.

NOD32 has a free scanner/cleaner and has won more awards then either Mcafee or Symantec's Norton.

NOD32 (detects spyware)

Annother good program that cleans registry, removes junk files, malware/spyware, etc. is Microsoft's Onecare safety scanner which is also a free scanner/cleaner.

Microsoft Live Onecare

Another one to add to the initial list:

http://www.malwarealarm.com/

Interesting how almost every button on that site links you to the download exe in one way or another.
