Yep, there are many different benchmark test for a lot of components in Fresh Diagnose. It is free to register and use the program.

a 3dmark03 tip says: "The CPU test results are only comparable with results using the same graphics card," so don't feel too bad.

Hey Nbt,

I have just gotten my 2GHz 8600 also but only got about 550 for 3dmark cpu. I have not done a clean reinstall yet, but have gotten good standard scores (10500 3dmark01 and 21500 Aquamark) in other benches. Do you think a clean reinstall would make a difference? If so, what programs do you reinstall from the standard install?

Cheers

CPU Test

To be honest, I don't believe that your CPU score will be effected by a reinstall of Windows. (Although whenever I buy a comp, I immediatly format it before I even use it, heh) because reinstalling windows and setting up software manually allows better Video preformance (Less apps being loaded up at Startup unless you have a lot to load up and want them there). I would hit the Windows+Break keys and see what speed you CPU is running at right now. If it's under 1.98 GHz then make sure that the battery scheme (selectable in the Dell Quickset) is set to Maximum Preformance and ATI's PowerPlay is set to optimal preformance for mid battery (if using an ATI card on battery). My 745 got 571 for a CPU score so I hope yours can hit over that.

Your CPU score would not be affected by a reinstall. The worst that could happen is you get spyware and it reduces your score a whopping .5% *Gasp*. Really, it's more trouble than it's worth.
Funny, all of the benchmarks with pentium M 755's have been in the same ballpark as my 745.

The CPU score shows up as part of your results, it is done automatically. Click on the button for detailed results after running your test.

Hey Malone,

I have been playing around wih my GPU a bit and finding its max settings. Best I got to was 411/317. Funnily enough I cracked 3520 in 3Dmark03 and 25,520 Aquamark, but only got 12,230 in '01. How the hell did you manage to get such a better score in '01??? Strange, considering that we have identical GPUs don't you think?

The other thing I noticed when finding max mem was that increases in mem speed did not increase benchmarks as much as the same increases in core speed. Any comments?

Cheers

A little Help

Noids,
This is gonna be a bit noobish but I am very new to OC and more specifically GPUs. hitting anywhere in the 4's is impressive but did you add extra cooling or what did you use/settings to OC it?

Thanks a million for any help you can give!

G'day GM,

I used ATI Tool initially, to find max core/memory settings. The tools included in this program are pretty unsafe however and I had bad artifacts/lock ups at mild overclocking levels. Recently I have just used RadLinker with the omega drivers to gradually increase settings until I got artifacts. Basically increased settings (on first the core and then the mem) by about 5MHz each time and ran Aquamark (because it is the quickest) to stress the system slightly. Got small artifacts at 425 Core and 325 Mem so backed off a bit on each and ran again without artifacts. Ran through all 3 benches then and played a bit on FarCry without probs.

I am planning to do the GPU heat mod, but trying to find copper shim still. Otherwise system is stock standard. I am overclocking only to measure potential however as all of the games I play work OK at stock settings and I get significant improvements with only slight overclocking.

Cheers

Noids you've been great on the help! Thanks a million and I'll work with my machine on this but hopefully i'll give mid clock settings a try and see what heat levels I hit. I'm a bit worried on a laptop using stock parts running the GPU OC'd on regular use and would you run yours say on 375ish for regular use or is it safe (doesn't exceed over 200F, heh) to run around the 417 or to the extent until hitting artifacts?

Thanks for all your help!

Personally, I have only run mine at the 417 for the time it took to test it and run the benches. In general I run mine at the stock settings with a notebook cooler. I play games about 50% of the time on the computer I guess, but I have had no problems with using it at stock settings so far, so do not see the need to risk an expensive repair job by constantly running OCed. All said and done however, I think Dell-Machina mentioned this also, but 5% OC should be pretty safe. ie: 355/255.

My other issue is that even at stock settings my card exceeds 100C when 3D Gaming, so until I do the heat mod I will definitely not be overstressing it (any more than 417/311 anyway )
Cheers

BTW you don't know anywhere I can get copper shim from do you???

Any luck with that yellow pages search title I recommended? I did one for near Port Hedland, found no rod, section and sheet... but did find one scrap metal merchant and three plumbers supplies that could possibly help you out...
