AMD announces 3400+ Mobile (1.4V - 62W) Athlon 64

On Monday, AMD announced the soon-to-be-available 3400+ Mobile (62W) Athlon 64. The AMN3400BIX5AR should be a 'ClawHammer' core (1MB L2 Cache) processor running a stock 2.2GHz (200MHz x 11) at 1.4V with a 62W TDP. It likely has P-States of 2GHz (1.3V), 1.8GHz (1.2V), and 800MHz (1.1V).

It's priced at $432 (1000-unit quantities), $15 more then a DTR (81.5W) 3400+, and should be available at Newegg soon.

Yum. If only MS would hurry up and get a release version of 64-bit XP ready for these laptops to ship with.

Now that Centrino-2 (with Alviso) has been pushed back to 2005 I am considering getting a mobile 64.

i'm sure you can add it yourself. the 3200 dtr works in the acer ferrari. so this should too.

This chip is still a powerhog compared to the LV chip in the 3200. Faster LV chips with 1MB L2 cache are coming next year along with a lower performing ULV line. I would recommend waiting for these personally. Nothing new here.

64W seems awful high for a mobile CPU...

Not sure what TDP means, wheter it be Thermal power emitted from the CPU or the power draw of the CPU, 64W is still high relative to the 24W power draw (i think so, off the top of my head) of the Dothan.

Maybe regulated to the Desktop Replacement section of the market only? Sure you may get stellar performance... for about half an hour without being plugged in.

I guess it wont eat into the Centrino 2's (Sonoma? stupid code names are soo hard to remember) potential market share by that much

This isn't the 35W, which is what is in the Ferrari, its the 62W, which I actually haven't seen in anything. It will work with the Clevo D470K, giving it longer battery life than with the DTR version.

It will fit in the 3200's socket as well, but I don't know why anyone would want to swap it in. The LV line is the future for notebooks until a LV s939 series gets developed.

I wasn't saying that it wouldn't fit into the socket. They are both Socket 754. The problem is that the motherboard may or may not work with the different types of processors. Going the other way, I know that the mobiles don't work in most desktop motherboards.

It is already available in units, just not available for sale oem by itself yet. eMachines has them in the m6811. They have been selling for a couple weeks at J&R.
