So I'm assuming that on bootup, the computer can't tell which display is the main one - the LCD or the rear port for an external display. So it must be setting the low resolution to avoid any trouble. ...
OK, here's a thought... what if you go into the BIOS and select LCD only (I believe the default is LCD+CRT or AUTO) try LCD-only and see if that helps.

I bet it won't, but it's worth a shot. (and right now it sounds like 3.4 users are shooting in the dark).

Question? How many of you with the 128MB M9 problem ran the modtool on the Cat 3.4 drivers before installing them? I know it has been asked before, but I didn't see anyone actually answer this particular question...

Also, could someone with the 128MB M9 look under Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Adapter and tell me what it says under Adapter Information - Chip Type? Mine is a:

Mobility Radeon 9000 AGP (0x4C66)

I have been examining Sager Cat 3.1, ATI Cat 3.2/3.4, Modded ATI Cat 3.4 .inf files and there are some big differences based on what Chip Type you have...

It may be possible to mod the Cat 3.4 with the information from the Sager Cat 3.1 .inf, as they seem to use the same basic files - just different default settings based on the Chip Type...

Myrkat - I didn't think of that! Just tried changing the BIOS settings and unfortunately it didn't work. Thanks for bringing it up, though!

Redundant - I have the 128mb M9 and the chip type is exactly like yours. I also just peeked into the .ini files of the 3.4 drivers and noticed that our chip type (0x4C66) isn't in the list. That would explain why it's not working correctly - it probably wasn't fine-tuned for us. Bummer

I checked, and the modtool does put the Chip Type correctly into the Cat 3.4 files...

How many people who have the problem with the 128MB M9 have correctly modded the Cat 3.4 files before the install?

Redundant,

I gave it a try... modded the 3.4 drivers, uninstalled the unmodded ones, and then installed the modded ones.

The installer worked this time (yay!) and upon rebooting, the resolution was 1600x1200. I changed it to 1154x852, reboot and it went back to the low-res setting. I couldn't get it to keep the setting

I also just noticed that the default refresh rate is at 75 Hertz everytime I reboot. Just a note to everyone else using the 3.4 drivers. You might want to change the setting to 60 on each bootup.

Oh, well

Arrow

What I did :-
-------------

1] Uninstalled the drivers and control panels of the old driver
2] Followed the instructions and installed the new drivers and control panels
3] Restarted to find res at 640x480 and MS asked me to click a baloon to set a better res. I did this and then set res to 1024x768.
4] At that point of time when I was running the benchmarks I did not check the display settings and later I found that it had my monitor (CRT) also set to mirror mode which I found quite annoying - perhaps this could have affected my benchmarks slightly...perhaps not...who knows...
5] I did not have the restarting resolution resetting (RRR) problem but yes - each time I restarted I had the problem of having the CRT also turned on to mirror mode for some reason.

NOTE : I selected the last possible "Radeon 9000 Series" just before the "Radeon 9000 Series Secondary" for my installation. Perhaps you can try the many available drivers there and find one that suits your system....

FINALLY : I am stumped

No I didnt use any of the programs you mentioned. I just followed the instructions I made for the Catalyst 3.2 Drivers which you will find in the link below :-

Just remember these drivers are not for mobility radeon, and installing them had risks involved, just as i told gsferrari when he wanted to install the cat 3.0, so just dont go out saying ati sucks just because this package does not work with the 128 mb radeon 900 mobility.

Now, you can try several alternative ways to fix your problem, like some software suits:

EasyRESChanger 2.00
http://download.com.com/redir?pid=10...-10124705.html

ResControl 1.11
http://download.com.com/3000-2343-10...l?tag=lst-0-15

You might need this also, if you plan on keeping the cat 3.4's and living with the problem:
http://download.com.com/3000-2195-64...l?tag=lst-0-12

You can also try to find a mod fix for this release of the catalyst software, but my best bet is to wait to another release and hope it gets fixed.

I tried cleaning the drivers then moding the drivers back on. I tried different settings. The resolution just keeps reverting back to a possessed and demon-like 640 by 480. I am convinced that this is only a problem for the fine folks that have 8887s and 5670s because those lappys have 128 mb cards in them. Correct me if I am wrong. I have tried at least one hundred different variations to get the cat 3.4 drivers working. I feel like my eyes are bugging out. lol.

Actually ATI does suck and here are some of the reasons:

1. There drivers suck.
2. They don't release drivers frequently.
3. OpenGL support blows for games such as Q3, MOHA, SOF, and so forth. In which the games wouldnt run without installing a 3rd party program.
4. Driver installation is a bitch unlike Nvidia where you just hit install and they actually install.
Those are my complaint abouts ATI. Compared to the Nvidia cards I have owned in the past ATI has yet to impress me with anything either on a laptop or desktop.

Which ati cards have you owned before? i have owned nvidia ones, and they are great (ti4200), but ati (radeon 7500, mobility radeon 9000) is great too.

I don't want this to turn into a flame war, but i have expressed my opinion, if you think ati sucks, fine, it's your opinion, but just don't go yelling it out loud just because the software that wasn't meant for your card does not work with your card.

I think the 8887 is great. I am very happy I bought it. The video card works great and the 3.2 drivers work great. No big deal about the cat 3.4 drivers - does not really matter.

On a side note, I really have to recommend the wireless Logitech mouse. I hooked it up to this fabulous laptop and it functions just perfectly.

Have a terrific day!

ATI has had a history of bad driver releases, to the point where it's expected. Driver releases were also very infrequent in the past, and of course, there's always been problems with 3D game support. ServerKing's opinions are similar to what I've come across on other forums. I've always used NVidia cards in my systems, but things are definitely looking up for ATI:

- The new Geforce FX card is physically inferior to ATI's latest Radeon (the FX card takes 2 PCI slots, one for the rear exhaust).

- ATI's driver releases are getting very frequent. Catalyst 3.2 and now 3.4 is out

This time around, ATI has a chance of winning over many hardware enthusiasts because of the poor design of the Geforce FX. So they've definitely put more effort into pumping out software drivers. While the Catalyst line of drivers started out as a simple marketing ploy to turn the heads of Detonator lovers (including me), their latest releases have clear improvements and I'm anxious to utilize the 3.4 control panel's enhancements.

I for one am looking forward to each Catalyst release. I've gone back to the M9 driver by Sager and will wait for them to integrate the 3.4 into their next release.

Hang in there, ServerKing!
