ATI Catalyst 3.4 Drivers Available for Download!

According to Anandtech the drivers are available right now for download.

So head over to ATI and GRAB THE DRIVERS and don't forget to check out the Optional Goodies if that sort of thing floats your boat...

OK locked and loaded...

Catalyst 3.4 drivers info :-
------------------------------

Version Number : 6.14.10.6343

Nothing special. They have claimed to have fixed the installation problem (the inf error) but its still there...

Use the same installation instructions that I made for the CAT 3.2 drivers.

I did only the 3D Mark 2001 SE benchmark because 2003 would have required that I install DX9.0a which I am not ready to do at the moment...

I used Powerstrip (temporarily - its going soon ) to bump the DDR to 182 (on par with the other 5660's - mine came clocked at 150 for some reason)

5660 Benchmarks with Catalyst 3.4 :-
----------------------------------------------

DDR = 150 -> 6757 3D Marks
DDR = 182 -> 7400 3D Marks

(note that these scores were using default settings after installing the drivers and the control panels. I am sure the score will improve if I adjust a few things here and there...)

Compare with...

5660 Benchmarks with Catalyst 3.2 :-
----------------------------------------------

DDR = 182 -> 7277 3D Marks

So its not THAT big a jump in performance...buts it is there...

I'll be playing some Battlefield to see how it performs...if I see any transparent mountains I am gonna trash the beer and revert to the Sager M9 drivers (whatever they modded to get those )

Talking WOw...

The new driver allows you to adjust not only screen brightness but contrast as well...

I ran the benchmark with Vertical Sync on and OpenGL and D3D texture settings and mipmap levels set to max...AND I had the CRT on and turned on as mirror in the control panel (I dunno how and why it set this as default...This must have sunk performance a lot..)

If I turn off Vertical Sync and set the other settings to Quality then I am sure I can break past the 7500 barrier...

Pretty good performance boost...

New Look control panel is the most obvious change from the old drivers...

Its up to the rest of the guys...

I just feel scores of 7500 - 7600 should not be surprising with the right settings and lesser goof ups than what I did (AND WITHOUT OVERCLOCKING)

Anyone with the 5670 notebook try the update yet?

I can't get these drivers to save my resolution settings. Once I reboot the system, my resolution is set back to 640X480.

I have cleaned all traces of files on the system + registry. Can't be anything that was left behind.

I have tried to many times that I lost count. I also unhooked my second monitor and have tried standalone, no luck!

Once I go back to the 3.2 drivers, everything is great again.

No problems in BF1942 and Morrowind and Splinter Cell!!!

I am positive (am I the last one to come to this conclusion) that DX9.0 is the unambiguous culprit...

I dunno about the mod...isnt the Radeon 9000 strictly mobility?? I thought they had different nomenclature for desktop and mobility variants...

They are basically the same anyway the drivers work very well...

Actually, if you use that mobility modification tool you don't have to use gsferrari's method. It was strange though, I couldn't use the tool to make it work with the Cat 3.2 drivers but it works with the Cat 3.4 with no problem. Maybe this is what ATI was saying about their INF Driver error fix?

These are the new set of instructions for the installation of the Catalyst 3.4 Drivers from ATI.

Steps:-

1] Download the Cat3.4 drivers from the ATI website or click the link below to get there directly :-
http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/powered.html

2] Save those files to some location on your HDD.

3] Start the Installation program for the Cat3.4 driver and save the files to some location other than your C drive (just to be clean about the whole thing).

NOTE : you have to stop the installation process after the files are extracted - exit the setup the next stage by clicking the cancel button...

4] Now uninstall the old drivers that you had installed.
Start -> Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs -> ATI Display Driver and the ATI Control Panel

Remove both these items and then restart your system

5] Windows will load with its crappy drivers and you will get a message saying that "new hardware was found" and then the driver installation window will open.

6] Here select "Install from a list or specific location"

7] Select "Dont search I will choose the driver to install"

8] Select "Display Adapters"

9] Click the "have Disk" button

10] You will get a big list - go to the middle of the list where you will see many Radeon XXXX series listed. Select any one of the Radeon 9000 series (but not the Radeon 9000 secondary) and proceed to install the driver.

11] You will get some sort of error message or a warning telling you that the driver is blah blah - ignore and proceed to install the driver.

12] The flying papers between two folder icons means that the steps you have followed are correct.

13] Congratulations!! Now you have installed the Cat 3.4 drivers. Before you restart please also install the ATI Control panel

14] ATI control panel is easy to install using the setup file that you downloaded without any special steps - just double click it and follow the instructions.

15] Restart the system and set the resolution you want because it will be 640X480 by default.
