Not sure why it's using / instead of \ to give you the error, but what you can do is try the emergency repair (first to go repair, then select emergency repair instead of console). Make sure that the CD you use is slipstreamed to the version of Windows you are currently using. Ask it to do a Fast Repair (I believe that's it), and let it run through all its tests. What it does at one point is check the files it has against core Windows files on your installation. You have the option of replacing files that it flags as possible problems. In this case, just replace/fix the file the error message says you are missing.

That is the recovery console, and basically useless. What often works is simply reinstalling Windows over the old copy. It will keep most of your settings and return the OS to a stable state. However, since you erased all your data, the only thing left to do is use their CD to reinstall windows.

Here's one solution by means of example:
My #4 computer, the Sager 8500, was finicky and blue screened when it felt like it, sometimes resulting in files being corrupted. One time, "ntfs.sys" was corrupted. If you want to talk about a critical situation, that's it. I could not boot to Windows, nor could I run setup and format the disk to reinstall Windows (because it would attempt to read the disk beforehand and blue screen because it needed "ntfs.sys"). By the way, "ntfs.sys" is the system file that handles the Windows NT File System on the HDD. I went out and bought my HDD enclosure and put my 8500's HDD in it and plugged the thing to my server. I then copied "ntfs.sys" from my WinXP setup CD to the correct location on the laptop's HDD, replacing the corrupted file. I stuck the HDD back in the laptop and the problem was solved. Perhaps you could have drawn on this solution? |
