Thank god for this site and this post!!! I might have to leave work early today because I'm so excited about the possibility of fixing my 5680 once and for all.

Question - Is there a readme with instructions on how to use this flash utility included in the zip file? Or is it basically the same as previous versions (i.e. boot disk w/o himem problem, type 10s, enter setup on first reboot to reload default settings and reenable hyper threading)?

basically the same....

insert floppy, use drdflash.exe (i couldn't think of anything else to call it) to make the boot floppy, then extract the contents of 568bv10s.zip archive to the floppy and reboot your computer with the floppy set as the first boot device....

The autoexec.bat will direct you to choose a flash---chose 10s.

Talking Thanks A Lot

Hi All:

Its was frustrating to learn the hard way the ATI does not update its drivers for the Mobility Cards (my first and last). Then it was a relief to discover the Omega drivers. Then it was frustrating to have my video bug out.

I am so thankful for this forum and this thread. I found it today, updated my BIOS, and now all appears to be well.

Thanks so much.

Can someone please email the bio update to me at CBeckstrand@gmail.com? I tried the link a few pages back and it's not working. From the posts it sound like it fixing the video is hit and miss but I'm willing to try anything. Thanks a ton.

Overclocking problem

I've noticed that the latest BIOS for the 5680 does not like being overclocked at all. Overclocking the 9600 Pro Turbo at all causes the screen to be all messed up and not viewable upon coming out of hibernation/standby.

Just an FYI:

I had a problem running Windows Vista Beta 2 on my NP5680. Video was extremely slow and choppy, and installation took forever. The initial solution was to "disable" the Radeon video item in the device manager, but the video was of course not optimal (slow refresh) and no Aero Glass...

After stumbling on this thread, I gave the 10S bios update a try.

That worked! If you have an NP5680 and can't run Windows Vista well, flash your bios to 10s. Worked for me, and the computer now has a Vista performance rating of 4, which is plenty for the new Vista glass UI.

fwiw,

not sure what version of vista you are using, but there is a marked improvement in release 5472 (available to beta testers).

My guess is that you are using the 5472 as the improvement was significant, and I am pretty certain the performance rating prior to that was a 3.6 or something

I was seriously doubting whether I might upgrade because even though VISTA runs on the 5680 with the 10s bios, I felt the performance just was not pleasant.

I still await further performance tweaks...the amount of time VISTA spends hitting the harddrive even with 1gb of memory makes it a little rough on the 5400 rpm drives, but VISTA is now more than tolerable on this three year old laptop....

amazing, I think. I was just working on a brand new thinkpad and I really don't think the performance quite matches up with this oldie but goodie laptop

Video Playback is squeezed

Someone pointed out to me that ATI now has the latest Cat drivers for notebooks, including Sager, so I uninstalled Omega Drivers and Radlinker and installed the latest Cat drivers.
Now I have 2 probs (which may not be related):
1. When I play avi and mpg, the video is scaled about 80% vertically. When I play these files in Quicktime they play properly, so I know there is a problem with the Windows video subsystem.

2. At bootup, I get this error:

Can not load low level device driver. Please restart application!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Mitch

07/24/06 Update:
I uninstalled the ATI drivers and the video playback problem went away. Then I installed the latest Omega drivers and the video playback remains correct. Draw your own conclusions...
