you could create a bittorrent for it and upload it to a tracker and seed it
and just limit your upload to whatever you're willing to upload
it's perfect for this scenario

ok, i got a working kernel finally that shows the ATA hd's and just pushed it onto a gentoo min install iso

this is basically just for anyone with an alienware 7700 or sage 9860 who has PATA drives and wants them to show up under /dev/sd*

torrent:
http://68.105.154.113:81/install-x86...r1.iso.torrent

my upload is limited to about 75 KB/s so make sure to keep seeding after you finish downloading to make other people happy
thanks @ oeri for his config =)

Torrents

Hi KWAGGA,

Torrents are not usually too much of a problem, you just need to download some software to download the torrent with. If you go to http://bittorrent.com/download.html

you should be able to download either a windows or linux version. If you have windows setup somewhere, that may be easiest for you, or, you can probally get the linux version running under your suse system, as long as you've got python installed. Once you've downloaded the software, you just tell it to download the torrent URL, and it gets underway. (unless your ISP or firewall is blocking it)

I don't have enough bandwidth on my server to host the ISO that Temptress has made. (Thanks Temptress).

xorg setup.

Hi Kwagga,

I am guessing that you don't have a window manager (either it's not installed, or it's just not running).

Are you getting that by typing startx, or are you getting it by typing xinit?

make sure you have the programme kwin installed (part of KDE, usually in /usr/bin/kwin). If you can start applications from within X, then try starting it.. you should then get some window managment.

If you can get hold of that gentoo install from Temptress, it may be easier, as with the dev version of yoper, you're going to be up against problems like this all the way, cos it's not installing things like KDE from the installer.

Does anyone know how to fix this ? as I cannot move any of my windows around the Desktop! IS this just a Simple setting in KDE that needs to be set? Pls remember I am still a newbie here and was my first time install stuff like this

Thnx in advance.

oeri, You had gotten it to work with the PROMISE PDC202{46|62|65|67} / PROMISE PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} drivers? As far as I know the controller is a PDC20378 but perhaps the libata patch expands that. The patch I had added another specific PATA option, which patch did you use on the 2.6.10-r4 kernel? The one I am speaking of is at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...-dev1.patch.gz
Could you post more details so I can get this Gentoo9860 enviroment CD to work properly with PATA? Great work thus far, also, did you use Catalyst and if so, what does your spec file say?

No the PROMISE PDC202{46|62|65|67} / PROMISE PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} drivers included with the kernel did NOT work. I had to apply the libata patch that I linked to in an earlier post. My LiveCD is completed, if I could just find a mirror now.

For now, I have a torrent hosted at http://oeri.ath.cx/sager9860

Cheers,
oeri

i'd suggest you guys use oeri's over mine

as it seems to support more i think =)

for bittorrent clients:
in windows i highly suggest http://www.bitcomet.com/
a list of others here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittorrent
i think most people in linux use Azerus or Yet Another Bittorrent Client

ok, most definitely don't use mine, i think i b0rked something and it gives I/O errors on the PATA drives after a while (and the drive is good...)

so i'm going to try oeri's, probably better anyway since i can now help seed his torrent =)

EDIT: oi, tried oeri's and first i had to type 'sager986' minus the 0 to get it to load the kernel...strange...and then it seemed to not create a ramdisk and panic.

man, this is getting to be quite annoying =/

I have been playing around with a non-catalyst solution that seems promising. I will see if I can't get something that might work (and use the libata-dev patch'd kernel) out today. The only problem I had with the most recent build was that I couldn't login due to the FS being read only. In any case: maybe it will work for this purpose.
