I'm on an Acer Ferrari 3200. And have a 2.2 generation iPod.

I can connect iPod to Ferrari using the 1394, with iPod adaptor and the firewire cable, which comes with the iPod. The laptop and iPod speak, and file transfer is possible, but the batteries of the iPod drain extremely quickly.

Similarly, I can connect the iPod to the Ferrari using a USB2 cable, again music can be transferred, but batteries again are drained quickly.

Previously, when I was on a desktop machine, I was able to connect iPod to desktop machine, using Fireware cable (without adaptor) and whilst transfers were taking place, the desktop was powering the iPod down the firewire cable, this was an excellent set-up, and I would like to replicate it again.

I have found a temporary workaround with an iPod cable which has both firewire and USB2 fittings, which are both hooked into my iPod right now, the firewire cable leading to the desktop is powering the Pod, and the USB2 leading to the Ferrari is transferring the files. `

Obviously though this is unsustainable as I'll need two machines from now on to load the iPod for any decent duration, and this is simply not possible when on the road.

Does anyone know what I should do?

You could always spend $99 and get a replacement iPod battery...

Uh...the solution is rather easy. Since you have the two headed USB and FireWire cable, use USB to connect to your laptop and connect the FireWire ending to the power adapter, which would power the iPod.

how many times do you need up upload music to your pod anyway? oh wait! every time you connect. next time....get something more "user friendly"

With your generation of the iPod, you will not be able to charge the battery through 4-pin firewire, or usb 2.0. The only solution would be to get a 6-pin firewire pcmcia slot card adaptor and use that to charge your laptop. The difference between 4-pin (mini-1394) and 6-pin firewire is that the 6-pin supplies power through the cord, whereas the 4-pin does not. The newer 4rth generation iPods can charge through the usb port.
