DeadEnd0 is a n00b, but everyone loves n00bs!
Will I be disappointed?

Well, this week I am going to order a 3790. What I want this for is to be able to write papers in college but also be able to handle some games. I have a desktop so it doesn't not have to be a desktop replacement, but I need it to be semi-light enough to carry around all day.

So, my question is this. If I am buying this notebook to be able to carry around with me but also be able to handle some of the newer games, like HL2 or Doom3 will I be disappointed, or am I right that I think this notebook satisfies these needs?

P.S.
The system I'm looking at getting:
15.4 WSXGA
PM 1.7ghz
512mb RAM (to start with)
60gb 7200RPM HD

I wouldn't count on those games running too well on this one. From what I have read here, the 3790 was meant to be a mobile not a DTR (Desk Top Replacement). The video card is a large factor. If you want a compromise, the 4750 seems to be the way to go because of its relative size and power.

The 3790 and the 4750 have the exact same video card, the MR 9700. The 3790 is not all too bad in the performance department, at least compared to other notebooks of its class. I would use the 30 day return period as a trail and get one, if it works to your liking keep it, if not you are out of the shipping both ways and the search continues. Personally I wouldn't count on too many games running well with 512mb RAM though.

I just thought i'd mention that with the 1.04 bios (4750) and latest catalyst drivers, that the 9700 video card is still very competitive.

I'd personally wait to see what new models come out as I haven't been too impressed with the latest generation sager models.

Do you guys think a similarly speced Dell i8600 would perform better or worse than the Sager 3790?

Sorry for all of the questions but I am looking for a "light" notebook under $2000 that can handle games, even if only on medium to low settings.

It would probably perform the same since they also have the same videocard, the ATI 9700 128 Meg. The 9700 is still a good GPU and shoul play HL2 and D3 on medium settings.

Actully it has the 9600 PRO Turbo(what ever that means). So, it is a little less powerfull. But thank you for letting me know that it might be able to handle the games on medium settings.

Does anyone on this forum own a 3790?

The 9700 is basically just a higher clocked 9600 than handles heat better. Peformance is around the same though i believe th 9700 is about 10-20% better. That's about 3-6 pfs more in HL2 and Doom3.

Instead of creating a new thread I'll just reuse this one.

I am looking at the Sager 3790 and either the 3790-C or 3790-S.

I would have them outfitted the same, 1 gig ram, 60gb 7200rpm, ect... But the difference would be 1.7Ghz or 1.8Ghz. Is that extra .1Ghz worth $53 or will their be no noticable difference between the two?
