Isn't that the only NVidia option for the FS series?

It's not awful. That's about what a laptop with an ATI 9600 would get. I have a Sony GRT360 at home with an nVidia FX5600 and it also scores about that, and that was Sony's most powerful machine.

Yes it's the 6200 TC.

I don't mind stepping down the resolution/detail a bit but I do want to play the latest games.

I've been wondering if I should send it back and get the Acer 8104. I had my last sony laptop for 4 years and it was solid. Hate to find out the Acer doesn't last as long.

830 in 3dmark05? Thats not bad, isnt that a higher score than the 5700/9700 in the Area51m?

Are those scores after a fresh XP install, latest drivers etc?

Those scores are after doing the Microsoft Windows updates. Turns out the Nvidia drivers were the latest anyways.

I tried the Nvidia overclocking and got 3DMARK05 = 915 (was 830 before). I selected the "Determine optimum rate".

How safe is this overclocking on a Sony fs500 / Nvidia 6200 ? If it hangs once in awhile, I'm not too worried. I just don't want to fry the thing.

You should try a fresh intall of XP. I'd imagine Sony would've installed a lot of garbage that you 'll never need that'd be eating up system resources. For instance, 26 processes are currently running on my P4 1.8Ghz laptop (which has been on for a week), how many on your FS500?

I read on Tomshardware that TurboCache kills this chipset. nVidia GeForce 6600 128MB is a much better option for the FS-series.

The 6600 would be great if Sony offered it. Anyway to do that at home? I thought one of the advantages of PCI-E is upgradeability.

After seeing the Acer complaints build, I think I'll stay put. The majority of my computer time is programming with some games on the side. I'm happy I can play Warcraft III finally as it is. I'll have to try Doom3 next.

acer is great for what you get for the price, but I have to agree bit worried by the problems people are getting. You have to remember its early days with the 8100s.
