Problem with hard disk??

Ok, since new my hard drive would tick when idle but everything seemed to work ok. However, lately I no longer get the ticking but the hard drive seems REAL slow and I'm sure is dying.

How can I test the hard disk to prove that it is dying, SMART does not report any errors?

Any links to programs or anything would be great - BTW its the 5400 40gig drive.
