m6805 keyboard replacement help needed

Hello,
I'm in need of replacing a keyboard on an m6805. Emachines want 160 bucks to replace. I'm an accomplished (and certified) pc tech, but have only done minimal work on laptops. I need to know which keyboard this machine needs, and where I can get one, especially if keyboards from different models/brands will work. Also a replacement/disassembly guide would be much appreciated.

History: I bought this machine on ebay. Worked great, but had some sticky keys, like something had been spilled on it. I cleaned the keys with alcohol as per the care instructions. I only cleaned the keys in the lower left quadrant, ie. the fn, ctrl, shift etc. After replacing these keys, various keys all across the keyboard failed to function. F2 will work to let me access bios, but the rest of the function keys will not. I did manage to get the screen to dim, but unfortunately I can't get it to brighten back up. The machine works fine with a usb keyboard..apart from the dark screen.

Thanks in advance for any help that may be offered.

Michael

Ok, If you click in my signature, I have a guide on how to replace ram. Follow the first few instructions and you will be able to see how to remove the keyboard.

Do not try this if you still need some minor functionality, but I once took a desktop keyboard (disassembled) and soaked it in a tub of 90% isopropyl alchohol then let it dry overnight in an oven, only with the pilot light on and had success. You may be able to give it a try but it may also ruin it 100%. With todays junk, I will almost guarentee it will ruin it.

If you need a replacement KB, look on ebay. Did you by chance get this laptop for laptopkid?

If you can access the BIOS, I think you can set it to boot the laptop with maxm screen brightness. That should take care of the dim screen...

Only the Gateway BIOSes have the screen brightness setting in them.

Thanks for the quick replies.

No, i got it from macuniverse-planetpc. I bought 2 from them, this one and an m2350. The 2350 works fine, after having to replace the addon ram.

The only keyboards on ebay specifically for emachines is the eslate keyboards. I don't know if those will work. There are a bunch for gateway machines that look the same, but I don't want to buy one and it not be compatible. I've tried googling to see compatable parts, but have had no success. If any of you guys knows which ones are interchangeable, I'll get one and give her a go.

thanks again for your help.

Those are shadow case machines from emachines/gateway. I don't know if they all use the exact same keyboard though. Some other similar machines can be found here: http://www.rmecc.com/~v2/em/index.html

OK, guys. I took the keyboard off with no problems, thanks to compman's pics and how-to. On the back of the keyboard, the metal part, was a large mass of sticky stuff. I'm guessing this was the leftover substance that was making the keys sticky. I cleaned the base with alcohol, and the contacts on the ribbon cable. I am letting the components dry now and I'm going to reattach the keyboard to see if that will make a difference. This may be a waste of time, but I'm a try until you get it, or know for sure you can't kinda guy. Regardless, it's already apart in the case the keyboard has to be replaced.

Thanks again,

Michael

$160 bucks, thats what I payed for mine too. I spilled water on it. Was there any kind of warranty on the m6805 when you bought it? You can tell emachines that it was sticking when you got it and they should service it for free.

I bought it second hand, so there was no warantee at all. I was even willing to buy the extended warantee, but they said I wasn't eligible.

I've had no luck on ebay so far either. I did email adeal and asked them if they could tell me which keyboards were compatible. Hopefully I'll find one soon.

They will not, as they are not very tech smart. A m520 should be on thier website and it will fit.

Well, Adeal doesn't have an m520 at the moment. Contacted gateway for grins and giggles, of course, they couldn't help me because I didn't own a gateway. Called emachines back, got the run around from the parts and customer service depts. I'm gonna try calling emachines corp. office back again. Otherwise, i'm just hanging out waiting for the part to show up on ebay.

If you guys know of any parts places that may have this thing besides ebay, let me know. I'm ok with buying a new one.

Thanks again,

Michael

Call gateway and tell them you need a keyboard for an m520, they should be able to just sell the KB. If not just wait, ADEAL always stips laptops and should post one within a few weeks.
