ARGH!! Why is it not working? Everytime I adjust the Maximal FID, and change it from normal to Maximal and press Apply, it freezes. So I tried doing it slowly (it was originally at 6, I increased to 7 and then 8 and so on). It worked up til 12. After 12, it starts freezing. Any suggestions?

I tried reducing the Maximum VID but it keeps jumping back to the original value whenever I press the apply button. I'm using a Compaq B3818AP.

What's the problem?

Now reducing the voltage wouldnt lower performance would it? I understand that its not down clocking the cpu, but would it hinder performance at all?

Does anyone have any before and after battery life results?
Has anyone done this at the hardware level (BIOS flash purhaps) after they found a stable voltage?

Good read btw

By undervolting the CPU I have increased my laptop's battery life by between 15 to 25 minutes on average (your mileage may vary). I find the greatest benefit to be the reduced fan usage and corresponding reduction in operating noise.

inotocracy: Reducing the voltage does not have any effect on performance because the CPU is still operating at the same speed, just reduced voltage.

Whitewind: I don't have an AMD system to test this but based on what I've read it should work.

Kenshino: Sorry, I don't have a Compaq so I can't help you.

Med62987: Are you attempting this on your Dell i6000? Do you have any other processor speed/voltage/etc adjustment software (Speedswitch XP, for instance) running?

Kenshino,

Is the max VID being reported correctly on the management tab, but incorrect max VID on the general tab? That is what I am expeirencing. What's really strange is it wasn't doing this at first, but started some time after I got it all set up and applied Auto Management. It may have been after I changed the power scheme under windows.(RMClock states you should set it to desktop or always on) But even though it states the incorrect max VID under the general tab, it still tops out at what I have set it to (.998V, the factory low). So maybe this is just a bug in the display. The pop-up balloon also reports my max VID setting correctly.(.988)

Also worthy of note, is that RmClock is now only displaying about 50% CPU and OS Loads. This is under the General Tab if the program. This is while running prime 95 torture test. It had been correctly reporting 100% previously. Perhaps the two are problems related? Of note is that the tray icon sometimes reports a more realistic CPU load via its red graphical display.
(edit: I just realized the icon's graphical display is based on the FID, it seems it has nothing to do with CPU load)

These appear to me to be bugs in the way the program is reporting info, but not the way it is actually managing. But it is harder to actually tell about the actual CPU load than it is the Max VID. The fan runs less and it feels cooler than before. But is this just from the lower voltage, or is it never getting loaded to 100%?

This is my initial findings on my 1.6 Fujitsu S6231.
Anyone else find any strange behavior? Please post any abnormalities.

Since this is done in software it shouldnt be permanant, once you power off your comp it should go back to the regular voltage. Try taking out the battery and ac for a few minutes and try again.

Damn! Nice post!! This is exactly what I need! Setting values now. I tried this before but could never get those settings to take effect - was missing the HLT step! Thanks!!

Awesome! Gonna try this.

God knows I don't even need the 600mhz of throttled power most of the time.

In reference to my previous post.

If you experience problems with RMClock only reporting around 51% CPU use while running Prime 95 torture test, as I did, you should not have checked "Run HLT command when the system is idle". If you read the documentation, it makes it sound like if you have a Pentium M (or Centrino as the doc states ) that you should check it. I had to go into the directory and run "RMClock_wipeout" to make it delete the registry entries it makes. Then I just re-entered RMClock and set all the previous values I had, with the exception of course of HLT command, and now it no longer holds me to 50% CPU loads. Running Prime 95 now maxes out at 100% load like it should.

On the general tab, I still have the VID under the maximal heading showing 1.340V. Though I have set it to 0.988V under the Management tab. It reports 0.988V on the Monitoring tab and under the current heading on the General tab when I am at my max FID (multiplier). So it appears this just a display bug, but I will continue to play around and see what I can find.

Feel free to PM me if run into problems.

To those having trouble at step 8-10, make sure you also set Minimal VID to the lowest voltage before you mess around with the Maximal VID numbers.
