FYI...

The current OMEGA driver for nVidia is using a very old version of the nVidia driver. It is using Forceware 61.77, while the latest version from nVidia is 71.84. If you are planning to use a mod version of nVidia driver, you could use http://www.dhzeropoint.net/ which uses the 71.84 nVidia driver.

This "might" give you a little better performance in terms between the Omega Driver vs using DHZeroPoint, as the older driver from Omega might not have proper support for nVidia GO Geforce 6600.

Smilepak, I have a question for you and anybody else who wants to put in their 2 cents.

I was notified that the company building my notebook is out of 512 sticks of PC-4200 ram, this is the system I ordered:
Asus z71v
Pentium M 760 2ghz
2x512 mb pc 4200 533mhz dual channel
hitachi 60gb 7200rpm
Intel a/b/g 2915
DVDRW drive

They said I can wait till it comes in (couple of days), or they can ship it with 1 stick of 1gb ram (single channel) at no extra cost, or they can give me a good price on another 1gb stick making it 2x1gb dual channel pc-4200. I am not sure what to do, I do compress dvds, burn, other file compression, and gaming. I would be using my laptop at home for mostly processes like compression, etc. and I would use my desktop for gaming (laptop gets to game when I am out of town). What would you do in this situation? I ask you smilepak because you ordered 2gb of ram and I wondered what you do that uses that? And if I could use that amount of ram, if it is worth it? Thanks

Go with the 1GB single channel. Dual Channel DDR2 right now only yield at best 5% improvement over Single Channel DDR2.

If they give you 1GB stick, that is a much better deal as you have extra slot for upgrade to 2GB, this will be extremely helpful in the future.

I went with 2GB because I wanted to do all in one swoop. Also, I've been spoiled with having desktops with a lot of RAM too.

so you do not think i would currently have a need for 2gb? I use programs like dvd shrink, win rar, azureus, vsub, and other decoding/encrypting/conversion software.

2GB now? not really. I am doing it fine on one of my desktop with 1GB. So I doubt you have any problem with it. I have 2 desktops. One with 1GB and the other with 2GB eheheh...

Do you really think you'll need 2gb of ram? A couple of days isn't too long. I would just wait if it were me, but you may have different needs.

Grahf has a few people on his/her side.
The Toshiba m40 probably use the Discrete version of the 6600 go with better memory on the board while the asus z71v use the On-chip 128MB DDR version provided by Nvidia.

Have a very simple answer for you. I do remember you by the way. Not here to tell you if your reseller has it in our out of stock. These modules are widely available. For us a stick of 1gb costs 40$ less then 2 sticks of 512mb. Yes our markup for the 1gb is enormous but its another issue. Keep in mind that you need 2 sticks to enable dual channel. 512mb mb ddr2 sticks are stocked everywhere for the most part

Hey guys, just giving the wireless connection a go on the laptop, top draw performance. As-well in the review I stated that the fans don't tun off on the laptop, but now after a close look both the fan seems to be off most times on web surfing and general work. Only during battery save mode though.

If this person is is reffering to the z71v then they have not seen too many laptops. I think what he/she means is that there are darker spots on the screen in certain light at certain angles. This is very common to alot of screens made by different manufacturers. I cant say its anything but a defect which is very equivalent to the dead pixel scenario. A small percentage of people may find this very annoying and would get very irritated. These are the same types of people (no discrimation intended to anyone who returned a laptop becuase it had a single or even 2 dead pixel) who return a laptop becuase it had a dead pixel or 2. If anyone has seen a laptop with a dead pixel especially a hi res laptop like this one with a dead pixel you should know that its the equivalent if a quater inch long scratch on your brand new bumber. In other wordsYou can only see it if you look for it. Also the poster never bothered to load a picture on, watch a movie or play a game. This anomaly goes away. Not all of them have this. I ve seen a few. My advice is if you dont like it and cant deal with it DO NOT USE A.L.S. (AMBIENT LIGHT SENSOR). Infact you have to disable the device. Had the poster tried this a return could have avoided a return. Guess i just dropped the bomb.

The more I read these forums the more I understand that some (certainly note all) respondents probably work for companies who sell these products. Yes, my screen may be unique in that it has this defect, but:
1. Nothing software driven works to correct this, not even what you are are referring to (ambient light sensor). it's a joke.
2. I have tried all backgrounds available in winxp. You can see it on all backgrounds except black. mostly on green. there is no need to load a movie. any internet/email/wordprocessing etc is done on white backgrounds. I got a headache after looking at it for 20 mins.
3. This is like having 2/3rds of the screen covered in dead or inactive pixels.
4. I have seen many laptops on this category in similar widescreen resolutions. No probs there.
5. It is not returned yet. Still in intensive testing trying to adjust the screen.
