Hmm... that's no good. They make a barebones laptop that has its warranty voided when you try to put in RAM? Anyways, how hard is it to get to that one slot of RAM? Are there instructions on how to do all of that?

GPU in Z71v is better 128mb instead of 64

BBoy, a full installation guide for the Z71v is on www.rjtech.com it's actually easy to get at either RAM slot, but from the back, you can also mess with hard drive, CPU, etc. which they wouldn't want you to do, hence (most likely) why it voids warrantee.

Seppuku, the Z70v is the M6v. The Z71v is the M7v. They're built on different series. The differences are such that the Z71v has a better video card, ALS, SATA support, and easier upgradeability/accessability of parts, and the Z70v is better in most other respects (looks, battery life, screen, building material)

Hey guys, I'm real tempted to buy this laptop. You can read about my situation here:
http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=89628

My main concerns are that I want a good 3 year warranty that will cover parts + accidental damage. Is there a good, reliable site I could get this from? The place the author got it from looks good, but it seems like a small business and I worry about what would happen if they went out of business in a year or 2. Would my warranty go out the window? How does that work? I do like the price/options they give though.

Also, I'm not sure I want WSXGA+, because of the issue of small text. My brother's have a non widescreen laptop with a 15 inch screen and UXGA, and I hate looking at it.

I ran into the same issue as well. WUXGA is 1900x1200 whereas WSXGA+ is 1680x1050 and WXGA is 1280x768.

On a 15.4" Widescreen laptop, the dimensions, if it were a 16:10 aspect ratio would be 13.0592x8.1620 (rounded).

So, how many pixels per inch?
WUXGA = 145.5 horizontal and 147 vertical
WSXGA+ = 128.6 horizontal and 128.6 vertical
WXGA = 98.0 horizontal and 94.1 vertical

As you can see, the drop from WUXGA > WSXGA+ isn't so bad, but the drop to WXGA is much bigger.

I don't understand why a higher max res is considered "better," especially for gaming. Most games look fine at 1280x960, so why the need for higher res especially when there is AA and such.

First off, things are sharper at a higher resolution. It might not be *as noticeable* on a smaller screen though. Another reason higher resolution is better is because of the fact that it allows for more desktop space with everything smaller. For me, I'm running at 1280x960 on a 16" 4:3 and find it ok. I think I'm going to try and step up to WSXGA+ with my new ASUS that will be ordered soon enough.

Asus' warrantee only covers their parts for whitebook units such as the Z71v. The rest of the parts are covered by the company you bought it from. To the best of my knowledge, the only company currently offering accidental damage protection warrantees for this notebook is Discount Laptops, which sells the Chembook rebrand. On their website it's listed as Chembook 2371v (Asus Z71v)

Hehe, I seem to following you around today Djembe Quick question: you say that the Z71v GPU is better than the Z70v? I always thought that it was the other way around

Yikes, I missed a question on my own review for 3 weeks? Bad djembe!

Cheerfulnut, if you haven't found this out since you asked, the GPU on the Z71v is better than the one on the vanilla Z70v and roughly equal to, although slightly less than the one on the refresh (Z70va).

and for anyone interested, the review is updated with my PCMark05 score.
