M5414 recovery media
Hi All,
I just bought a m5414 from Best Buy and the system wanted me do an immediated recovery media backup which I tried but was advised that a backup had already been done and it wouldn't let me build one. I called emachine support and was advised that it was a known problem and they would ship me a recovery backup. After waiting two weeks I called again and was told I was backordered!!! I tried to install a dual booting Linux system and then tried to uninstall but as you might have guessed...it didn't work. Now I can't even bring up Windows. I tried to install a Windows XP home edition but don't have all the drivers that were on the original system. Anybody know or have an original backup of their system that I could copy or any other suggestions. Really appreciate any help I can get. Thanks, Ron |

M5414 recovery media
It seems I'm on the same boat with you. In my case, I simply reinstalled Window XP professional version, without trying to backup the recovery disks, because I simply thought the CDs already contains the original drivers.
After the installation of XP prof. I realize the CDs shipped with the laptop were blank. I called best buy, they ask me for $90.00 to fix it. I then called eMachines, they asked $20.00 for it, so I requested one on Sat. April 9. However, after 10 days, it's still out-of-stock. Did eMachines ask you for $20.00 for shipping and handling? Any luck to getting it so far? In the meantime, I figured out the video driver from SiS (www.sis.com) so that I can now at least use my laptop. I have an extra external wireless adapter that is working as well. I couldn't make the internal wireless adapter work yet. Another missing thing is the multimedia driver - I couldn't find the right one. Do you have any idea? I just called eMachines again, and they still can not give me any date when I will receive my recovery CDs. Regards, Ming |

I'm having the same problem with this model. I swapped the 60gb HD out with the 20 in my mp3 player because I needed more storage for my mp3's and can use the player as an external mass storage device. I then in-stalled Win XP Pro and cannot get the wireless, sound, or video to work. I've emailed emachines and am still waiting on a reply on how to obtain drivers. =/ Thanks for the link to the graphics drivers thoughtmiliu99~!

Ok, after talking with gateway, they said:
The drivers are not available for download. That they are only on the original HD and you need to make your recovery disks. Also, the drivers will only work with XP Home. Thats pretty lame, however I did get the cust. service rep to give me the model of the graphics accelerator which is a "Sis M760 ultra 256." (www.sis.com) has the drivers under IGP Graphics Drivers - then the first selection of the next box. They work too! =) Edit* (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Software=True)) has the AC 97 audio codec. =) I have it downloaded and working great! Yeah, what's with this DIY restore CDs? I just got a pair of eMachine T3090 Sempron 3000 desktops for my kids (sweet deal, $329.99 ea, including monitor and printer) and had to make them too. I can understand having the latest updates and patches on the restore disks by making your own, but these machines couldn't have been made more than a couple of months ago (they don't even show in eMachines support yet) and they still needed 25 patches from WinBlows update! By the time I probably would have to use the restore, it'll probably take 200 XP patches anyway.

I just bought a M5414 last week from BestBuy. I've yet to make the backups, but after reading this forum I'll be sure to do that. Does anyone need a copy? If so, either reply to this forum or email me at NisAznMonk@aol.com
All I'd ask is that you send me a self addressed stamped envelope so I can send it to you. |

The M5414 have a problem to where you will get a error message that says that he recovery has already been ran and cannot do it again, I do know that there is a patch that you can download from a Gateway FTP Server, but it hasn't been offered to the M5414 Systems so I dont' think it will work.
The reason that the CD's are out of stock is because this System is brand new I'm assuming, Good Luck guys |

Finally found the drivers for the Integrated Wireless Broadcom NIC.
Long story....but....you can get them from HP's website, under drivers for the Z series pavilion. For those of you who did not make a restore disk like I, I'd download these 3 drivers and burn them to cd for later use. I've even heard that the restore drivers will only work on XP Home. So if you want to use XP Pro or 2000, you'll need to play in this easter egg hunt to make your machine work. Good Luck! |

You actually did the best thing. I hav =e found the HP and Dell drivers to work much better then the ones provided on my emachines. The ones that came with my emachine also didn't support WPA, whereas the HP and DEll ones do.

I ran into a similar problem. I talked with Best Buy reps to get a list of drivers. Unfortunately, the last M5414 had been sold. I then got online with an eMachines rep. What a joke. He had no idea what drivers a 5414 required.
Through trial and error and a lot of time spent googling, I managed to come up with a list of all drivers not auto-installed by Windows XP: SiS Mirage2 Graphics driver (www.sis.com) SiS Acceleration Graphic port (www.sis.com) SiS IDE Controller (www.sis.com) SiS 900 Fast Ethernet Controller (should already be installed via XP) Realtek AC'97 Sound System (www.realtek.com.tw) Conexant Modem driver (www.conexant.com) Broadcom 802.11a/b/g WLAN driver (www.broadcom.com) After installing the appropriate drivers, my system hardware device list is now clean, and everything works. ![]() Good luck, W James |
