Our admins take the best and most objective laptop reviews and index them here to create a distinct selection of quality reviews with averaged overall ratings. Many of these reviews have benchmarks attached to them which allows for users to compare their laptop's performance with others, and ultimately enables us to provide a sortable list which at a glance show the fastest laptops amongst a variety of applications (gaming, video editing, web browsing, etc...). As far as I know, the charging process when the machine is on is simply much slower than when the machine is off.

I dont have the specific facts about the Li-ION batteries, though. Each type of battery has specific properties and care guidelines. Can anyone post the info?

Question

I just ordered a 5680 yesterday, with 2 batteries, and I also would love to know the proper treatment of them, so they don't deteriorate. I know you have to drain them periodically ... but I'm sure there are specifics? Anyone?

good

well.. its good to know that the 5680 i just bought for school will be good for using in school once and a while, when i'm not using it for Visual Jockey or synth stuff
of course. How long do you think dual batteries would last in a situation where the CPU was getting near 100% usage without interruption...running an app like VJo as i mentioned earlier?

Li-ION batteries should not be conditioned or cycled prior to use - as opposed to NI-CAD which were supposed to be fully discharged and then charged a few times.

Li-ION batteries should be treated just the opposite!! They should be fully charged before their 1st use.

Really depends on what classes and times you choose to add to your schedule. My freshmen fall semester I had Calc I three days a week for 1hr 20 min, the rest of my classes (4 of 'em) were once a week, 3hr lectures.

classes

I see, how do you like the classes once a week but for three hours? Do they give you breaks at all? Are you allowed laptops in all of them?

I only have one class like that and I get a break half-way through. Laptops are allowed and my 5680 is a saviour!! As mentioned above, it is an 'artsy' anthropology (not that bad, though) course, so there is A LOT of f*ing writing. The first time I went to the lecture my wrist almost fell off; I swore to bring my 5680 every week after that, lmao.

my four hour class is why i'll really need the laptop.... its called regional land use planning and the prof has us read nearly 200 pages of land use studies and articles in pdf or html form each week, so if it weren't for the computer i would have a huge stack of paper by the end of the semester. Which brings me to another nonsequitor... have any of you guys thought about using a graphics tablet attacted for taking notes with a pen and digitizing them as you go? I've been thinking about doing that.

They were okay. You're allowed to have a laptop yes. Some of the better (newer) labs have not only easily accessible power outlets, but also network ports to plug into. Though that doesn't really matter, since they have wireless too.

For people bringing there 5680's to lectures, is it so big you feel goofy pulling it out onto the desk? (mine hasn't arrived yet so I don't know the real physical size of it yet).

Why would you feel goofy? You have a kickass laptop. :-)

Every prof I have seen has asked me about the laptop and all of them were amazed to hear about its capability...and mind you...I had a 5660

Tech support guys took my laptop for a day/night shift and ran some of their database updating software...they all went home 2 hours earlier than usual
