I checked the bios and it said 2.0GHZ. But windows would not boot up. Everytime I tried to start windows it would restart. I had to take it out... I'm one of the very few unlucky ones who couldn't do this mod :-(. I do have a dothan 1.5GHZ in another one of my laptops, I'll just pull it and see if it works and if the one that I bought works in that other laptop, then that would be awesome.
could be that it's overheating. did you screw in the heatsink assembly tightly? try removing the thermal interface material and substituting as5 or something

It's not impossible that the chip can't do 2.0GHz. I mean, it's specced for 1.5GHz and Intel bins them so there's a huge spectrum of possibility there. But yeah, you should make sure that the heatsink is on right. If it's not bad things will happen, especially with it overclocked like that. The thermal protection my not slow it down well enough to keep it stable.

Well, it did seem very hot after the overclocking. The only thing that I did differently, was that I simply used rubbing alcohol to remove that gray stuff on the little piece of aluminum. I did not scrape off the aluminum pad that was on the heatsink. Could that be the reason why I am getting the crashes? Btw I used AS5, and I tightened it semi-hard, because I was kind of afraid of cracking the core or something.

Before I forget.. does it matter what kind of material the piece of wire is made of? Will a copper lead work?

Anything that conducts electricity will be fine. It's simply a pull down to ground so the current through the wire will only be a few milliamps at most (probably microamps). Assuming ~3V and at least a 1 kOhm internal resistance the current would be less than 3 mA. No worries

I just took it apart and I tightened the heatsink pretty tight. I still have the same problem. My 1.5 -> 2.0GHZ was unsuccessful. I did everything correctly, yet it still does not work. In the bios is shows up as 2ghz, but it will not boot up into windows. I tried to put in the dell recovery disk and the system would lock up due to the processor locking up. It was not hot at all this time, I felt it soon after I turned it off. I am going to return this processor to the ebay seller that I got it from, after I try the swap with the dothan in my other notebook. :-(

Man...I think I just fried the sucker...I put my old 1.6GHZ back into it and I cleaned off the heatsink and cpu, I went into windows and then it shut off... I tried to turn it back on and the display wasn't working. Moments later, the display was working and windows was about to boot back up, then it shut off. Now the display won't work and the caps lock light won't even turn on. When I press the power button, it boots up...the fans turn on, I hear it working, but my display isn't working. I'm so pissed off...I was already pissed off because my pin mod didn't work...now on top of it...the system won't work at all...

check to make sure that your LCD ribbon cable is securely plugged in

and also YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY THERMAL PAD LEFT WHATSOEVER ON YOUR CPU OR THE HEATSYNC... scrape the crap off as your processor is not getting an even contact with the sync...

your fans should automatically turn off after a few seconds after the bios is able to query the processor's thermal probe otherwise you probbably have an overheating problem...

when you put the old chip back in.. did you pull the wire out?

I completely stripped off the thermal pad and I made sure that everything was flawless. I got it to work after I did the system reset that Dell tells you to do. http://www.dell.com/fixit Man I was relieved. I found out the problem is in the 1.5GHZ processor that I ordered because I put it into my other laptop, and it would not boot up. I am going to return it ASAP to the seller.

Some people should stay away from modding their computers.

Well, now the big question for me is this: am I one of them?

This works on a 400mhz FSB board (i8600) or is it only for the 533 boards with a 400 chip with the mod?
if its for all dothans @ 400 im SO doing this tonight, 2132mhz here i come!
