Here are 2 websites installed Linux with Z63A, at least the chipsets are the same, I don't know if this helps but you may email them to see if they can help you.

Hey guys I've got an interesting question for you, this is not necessarily restricted to the Z71V but that's the notebook in question

I know that this laptop supposedly supports dual channel, but I only bought a stick of Kingston 512 because I was being cheap and the thing was on sale. Now I would like to add another stick, but the price is hiked back up on the Kingston and similar chips such as the OCZ I can get for about 30% cheaper, except I know that you're not supposed to mix and match brands

So, being the cheap bastard I am, what do you guys think are my chances of just buying an OCZ stick and have it work in dual channel with the kingston?

Also, I've read some problems with the keyboard latch installing the 2nd memory module, is there anything special I should watch out for? I've seen some vague pictures but it really doesn't give me any idea at all as to how to actually pop the keyboard open - without doing damage to it. THanks.

most important thing is don't forget to unscrew the 2 "K" screws at the bottom of the KB.

like Ken said, don't forget the screws on the bottom. After you unscrew them, there are three tabs on the top of the keyboard. press them in with a small flathead screwdriver, and you can lift the keyboard out. the RAM slot is under the lower left section of the keyboard.

Ok, I'm still a newbe. I found the two screws marked <k> on the bottom (also tried removing all the others I could find underneath to no avail). After I remove the two <k> screws, where are these tabs, exactly? I would appreciate very detailed instructions. Just trying to add another 1 GB of RAM ...

A drawing would be helpful!

Thanks!

I attached a screenshot of the applicable page in the Z71v hardware manual

and here's what it looks like after you pop out the keyboard

I remember reading somewhere that Ubuntu and Gentoo worked, with some modifications. Google?

linux on z7v1

I run Fedora core on mine. I do security scans with it. However it isn't the primary operating system. I run Windows XP Pro and run Linux through VMWare Workstation. The workstation cocts money, but VMPlayer is free, and will also let you run Linux distros on your laptop.

I can't believe the performance I get! I can run Nessus scans on all ports of a networked computer in minutes! My peers sometimes take an hour or more to do a similar scan.

The part I like the best tho, is the snapshot ability. I can create snapshots of my Linux machine, so if I mess something up bad, I can revert easily to an earlier state.

Exclamation Problem Solved for the Intel ProWireless 2200bg?

I've tried everything that I could think of to solve the problems with the 2200 dropping speeds. I am using a Linksys WRT54GS router.

I've tried 2 other routers - a Belkin and a Netgear - all with the same results.

I've finally did the following:

1) ping www.dslreports.com -f -l 1500
This is to test the MTU of the router. Linksys says to leave in auto, but keep it between 1200 and 1500.

I found that I had 100% - no lost packets, at 1150! Add 28 to account for the IP header, to 1183. the 1500 in the ping command is the MTU forced setting.

Keep lowering it until you have no lost or fragmented packets.

Once you get to that point, slowly increase until you start loosing packets again, then go back to the last good, or maximum, setting. Add 28 to account for the IP header. Use this for your router's MTU, and you should be good to go!

2) I Set my router for 1183 MTU.

3) Change 2200 settings to HIGH for throughput, power, etc.

4) Stopped using the Intel management software. Just using the Windows application.

After nearly 24 hours, there has been no drops in the signal speed even though the quality varies from good to excellent.

I am using a static IP with the 2200, and not broadcasting the SSID and using WPA-TKIP.

Hope this helps.

Al

How often do you clean out your fans? If your GPU / chipset fan has a lot of dust or lint in it, that would cause some of the failures you described (all seem video related)

I stopped overclocking, things are back to rock solid stable with 1.5 gigs of ram, gpu temps are 5C lower too while idling, so I think I'm out of the woods now

z71v gpu

I think I have the same problem B Nietsnie had with his z71v, fried GPU. I was wondering if anybody knows if getting his replaced fixed his problems. Also I was wondering what fps people get when running video stress test in counterstrike and at what settings? Trying to confirm problem. I have 17fps at recommended settings and res, 23fps at 800x600 and lowest settings. This seems awful to me, and due to the video choking i get all the time, I think i have the same problem as him, and want to get it repaired, just want to confirm this first.

btw I have reformatted and tried a bunch of other things, and still problem persists.

Just got mine back from repair, and now it seems whenever my cpu fan kicks in, any game i try to play will just go to hell. Frames will randomly jump from 70-20 and back very randomly in a 4s time period over and over, making things very difficult to play at all.

Anyone have experience with this? im using hte 212 bios froma asus.

I'm running the same BIOS and haven't had that problem at all. What other programs are you running? It's possible that there's something else that's taking up enough system resources that it's interfering with your game.

I have had framerate problems up the wazooo. More so i reformat, and it seems fine, then a few weeks go by, and i start to get like 5 fps on everything. unplayable and unwatchable. Sent mine in for repair, they said they couldnt find any problems. So i am reformatting once again, installing a different virus software...we'll see what happens this time, but i have done this like 5 times already, and my fps always goes to hell. They said they ran 3dmark2005, the gpu test or something on the z71v s they have and they said they got 15-20 fps standard on those video stress tests.....

I remember getting 70 fps in Counter Strike source when i first got the laptop
