Since I'm going to probably return my Asus Z71V due to the screen (eye strain), I wanted to take this opportunity to try and compare the x700 to the Geforce Go 6600. Basically, every other benchmark has been either unequal, outdated, or lacking on information. So I've decided to try and even the odds... I found some nice X700 benchmarks based on the 8100, and ran my timedemos exactly the same as them. Here's what I've gotten so far:

DOOM 3



If you're planning on running these tests, here's how you do it:
1. Open Doom 3.
2. Go to Options, System, and then select High Quality.
3. Click on Advanced Configuration and make sure that all the settings are set to Yes except for Vertical Sync. Anti-Aliasing should be set to whatever each benchmark was run at (see each graph).
4. Apply all changes and return to the main screen.
5. Press ` or Ctrl-Alt-~ (right below the Esc key) to bring down the Console.
6. Type "image_anistropy n" where "n" is whatever value Aniso is set to in each benchmark. To turn it off, type "image_anistropy 0".
7. TO RUN THE ACTUAL BENCHMARK: I used the included "demo1" benchmark. While in the Console, type "timedemo demo1". Before continuing, remember ONE THING:
Everytime you close Doom 3 and reopen it, run the timedemo once so that the textures and info can be cached. Discard this benchmark. It will alter your values significantly!
8. I recommend running each one twice (the first one would be three times, for caching purposes) and taking the highest of the two values. Make sure you record what settings you benchmarked each one at!

Halo 1.06



To run Halo's benchmark:
1. You must set the selected resolution from within Halo itself, then exit. All other settings are default! (There are apparently tags like -width1024 and -vidmode, but none of them worked properly)
2. Go to Start, Run, and type in "command" and press enter.
3. Type ""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\halo.exe" -nosound -timedemo
4. Halo will open, stop briefly at the menu, and then enter into four in-game renders.
5. When it finishes, it will close and append the FPS info to a file called "timedemo.txt" in your Halo directory. You can run the test multiple times, as it will not erase past tests.

For all notebook users, please attempt these benchmarks. If you do decide to send me your benches, make sure you note what resolution and options you set; furthermore, and this is very important, remember to tell me what your card is and what clock speeds it is at. Also make sure that you match the settings exactly to what was benchmarked.

I'm doing this because there aren't really any great compositories of benchmarks for mobile cards. Mainly, I'm concerned with the differences between the X700 and the Geforce Go 6600, but this really doesn't have to stop there. I will update the graphs with each new addition, but if the addition is basically the same, don't bother. I'll also mark computer specs next to each one, but limited only to processor type/speed and RAM.

I also do not have HL2 or anything else installed yet, and I'm on vacation so do not have access to the disks. However, if anybody has them and wishes to clock them, feel free to send me your benches! I'm making a large excelt sheet meant explicitly for this, so hopefully we can get a large number of benchmarks. Not only will it make it easier to compare video cards, but it will also give newbies a better idea of what to look for.

I think the eye strain you are getting is because of the high resolution on a small screen.

A lot of people get confused and wanted the SXGA+ or UXGA type screen, but they wanted in a 15" or 14" screen without realizing the fact these screens have a native resolution.

For example, a WSXGA+ screen native resolution is 1600x1050. In a 17" screen, this is awesome too look at. On a 15.4, it is a bit small, but bare able to some people. But I've seen people wanted this type on 15" and even 14" screen. Now that is insane. On a 14" screen, XGA is good enough. Maybe stretching it out to SXGA. That will give you 1280x1024 on 14". Which is okay. But beyond that is insane.

The best way to visualize what type of screen fits you is to see it at your local computer stores.

People need to understand this and I've time and time again mention that.

Was the eye strain really that bad? This was a big concern for me in getting an SXGA+, and most people I spoke to said it was perfect for a 15.4 inch screen...

My dad has a Dell D810 with a WXGA screen and I have the Z71V here with the WSXGA. To be honest, I couldn't live with the WXGA screen although my dad says the opposite. I find there's not enough room on a WXGA desktop for what I do. My dad on the other hand finds text too small at the 1680x1050 resolution of WSXGA. Must be my young eyes.

Good thread! You might want to add video card driver version too since results might change after several driver releases.

15.4" widescreen is shorter then 15" and 14" regular, so dpi is actually higher on a 15.4" WSXGA+ then a 15" or 14" with SXGA+ (1400x1050). Everything is huge on a 14" with XGA.

Yeah, I was thinking of just having my spreadsheet have as much information as possible, even if its not represented in the graph. Either way, sadly enough, my Z71V is completely boxed up and sitting behind me. I was actually checking my email to find out the address I have to send it to, and I shall be sending it out bright and early tomorrow. When I get the Z70V Refresh, I'll be doing these tests as well, so maybe one of you guys with the Z71V can team up with me (*coughsmilepak*) and do mass-testing.

Either way, I hope this is helpful and for all you guys who have gotten higher scores and what not, please post! I hope to get as many mobile cards as possible!

EDIT: And yeah, my eyes felt like they were going crossed... I have that problem when things are hard to read, and everytime I was looking at the screen, it felt like things were moving outside my focus (the "sparkles"). My eyes are weird.... they're slightly out of focus (something like 18:20), so maybe that just made it worse. Either way, I noticed the sparkles even here on the forums. :x

For the graphs in your original post, what is the difference between the purple and orange bars? Does one of the z71v have the GPU overclocked?

And about screen resolutions, if the native resolution makes the text too hard to read why dont you just lower it a notch?

Yeah, the clock speeds are right below where it says "Geforce Go 6600." The first one is 250/500, which are the stock speeds, while the second is 300/600.

Ah.. I see. The spacing threw me off alittle.

I'm currently redoing them in Excel... I was using a neat little online thing (the graphs actually look quite attractive, imo!), but it'll be easier to manage if I don't have to re-enter EVERYTHING everytime, eh? Anyway, please post your benchmarks! Any graphics card... from the X300 to the 9700, even IGA if you're willing. The more the better!

Oh, and smilepak! You can post your scores too, even though I have them up... I'm organizing them by users as well, but we'll see how well that goes. Either way, I know you play GW at a much higher clock speed. There was also someone around here who overclocked the x700... I'm _really_ interested in those!

Could you try running them at 4XAA and 4XAA/8XAni? Just to provide complete results? Just set them under "Settings" in 3DMark05. Thanks for the results though, I have to leave immediately, but I'll add them as soon as I get back!

Sorry I only have the freeware version of all the Futuremark programs. BTW I got just a hair below 7000 on 3dmark03.
