Review: Asus W5 with pics
OK folks, I know Brave has allready done a review of this baby but what the heck, here we go again
Spec Asus W5360A-UPW, white version Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz in old money!) 512MB DDRII RAM 80GB HD, 4200 RPM 12.1" WXGA Colour Shine LCD 2X DVD Dual (DVD+-R/RW) Intel 915 Intergrated Graphics 1.3 Megapixel Intergrated Camera Size: 305 x 220 x 29.8mm (W x D x H) Weight: 1.6KG [IMG] [/IMG] [IMG] [/IMG] [IMG] [/IMG] [IMG] [/IMG] [IMG] [/IMG] [IMG] [/IMG] [IMG] [/IMG] DESIGN: 9/10 Well, what can I say, this thing is an object of beauty even if I do say so myself. Kinda looks like an I-Book but manages to look a lot more professional. I think it beats both the Apple and Sony in design, Asus has definately got the right balance between substance and form. At this moment in time, I don't think there is anything out there that even comes close to this on looks. BUILD: 8/10 This thing feels sturdy and seems up to the task of a good battering. All buttons click and tap with a reassuring feel of solidity, I would almost say its up there with Toshiba and IBM. There are three USB 2.0 ports, one on each side and one at the back. There is also a mine Firewireport. The card reader is a 4in1 variety (SD/MMC/MS/MSP) and there's even a fake SD card plug to keep the dust out. The Keyboard feels a bit spongy to touch but that just my own personal preference. All the keys are laid out well, plenty of spacing considering the size of the chasis. HEAT: 7/10 Without the mains plugged in, this is a dream to use on your lap, after two hours of surfing, I had still not experienced the "Roasted Nuts Syndrome" which was quite impressive. The fan only come on once during booting and then doesn't come on again, leaving you feeling sometimes that it doesn't work. But all this is made up when you plug in the mains and the fan stay on the whole duration, alltough not noisy, you can still hear in fanning away. The chasis remains relatively cool but where the HD is, it gets a bit warm and should be kept of your lap if your value your fetility (advice for gents only )The AC adapter is is excellent, unlike the ACER 8100 series which gets so hot, you can't pick it up with your bare hands. PERFORMANCE: 7/10 Benchies - 3DMark03: 983, PCMARK04: 3804 As you can see, the W5 is not going to set the world alight with its performance. You will not be able to play any of the latest games on this due to the lack of a dedicated graphics card. Shame but playing games is not a priority when you buy an lightweight portable like this W5/Sony S Series/Toshiba M300. It gets the job done and then some on office task and surfing the web, it can even handle video editing as well. MOBILTY: 10/10 This is what I broght the W5 for, ease of transport around the world. Because this thing is relatively light and small, you can take it anywhere. It has a strong wireless antenna, I am actually in the garden doing this review right now, a good 25-30m away from the router and the signal is still 54mbps. SCREEN: 9/10 The screen has an anti glare coating which takes some getting use to. At first, it seems dull and when there is a bright light sorce close to the screen, it doesn't seem to work. But in low light conditions, the screen rocks, very comparable to Sony but not quite there. OVERALL: 8.5/10 I am very pleased with with this purchase, its every that I had hoped for. At first you have to readjust your mindset as I also own and had been using my ACER 8103. This is a bit of a beast in the performance stakes but also weighs nearly twice as much as the W5. When you factor in the size and weight of the W5, the performance trade off is not even considered a scacrifice as mobilty and looks that you are gaining more than compensate this. Yous also get a free bag and sleeve with the purchase, very nice of Asus and as far as I'm aware, they are the only manufacturer to do so. All in all, this is a top buy, if your looking for a portable lappy then this should be at the top of your list.
