wireless network speed connection

hi-
Searched threads need help.

I notice when online, through my wireless connection, that the speed seems tochange alot. When I hit the icon on the bottom right of the computer sometimes it says "Speed 24.0 Mbps, or Speed 54.0 Mbps, it seems to fluxuate alot. I notice when it says a speed other than 54.0 Mbps things load slower from web pages. Regardless of what the speed says, the Signal Strength always says" Excellent " and the status always says " " Connected."

Any help would be appreciated!

The router is a Linksys wirless G 2.4Ghz 54Mbps broadband router
The computer is a Sony s460 lap with the built in w/lan.

Thanks-Bob

well technically you speed shouldnt chage at all if it drops to 24mbs. I doubt you have a connection that fast. I have cable and get 6mbs, so as long as my wireless connection stays above 6mbs, i wont notice a differance. The same should apply to whatever your max down speed set by your isp is. The only differance you should see when your connection drops to 24ms is in transfering files between computers.

Wireless connection is encrypted and will be slower than a wired connection. Fluctuation is just the nature of wireless, nothing is wrong with your computer. If you want to improve your signal, some tin foil made in the shape of a bowl pointed towards your computer works wonders. (I swear it works )

You can hit 100 with the new gigabit wireless paraphanalia. I max at 54 because my router doesn't go that high, but it's possible. Sometimes I have half that, but it's probably from interference from my wireless mouse, cordless phone, cell phone....

Your Internet connection, if Cable Modem HSD (currently about the quickest) is at best 6 Mbps. Even the dirtiest wireless connection can easily handle that.
